Shy Kids:does not talk outside home..pls help

Hi,

My son is 3 years old and goes to a playschool. He' s is very playful and talks a lot at home. But he remains quiet when we go outside our home. Even if he talks, he talks so slowly that you have to bring your ears closer to his mouth to listen to him. His teacher has also complained the same to me. She says that he' s very observant and know all his rhymes and numbers but when she asks him a Question, he does not answer or he speaks very slowly. She says he remains to himself in the class and does not play with other children. He has been going to school since June 2007 and still I don' t find any change in him. Also, if I ask him what the teacher told in school or what he did at schol, he does not open his mouth at all. At home, he plays with the neighbourhood kids but only if they come home. He is again withdrawn when he goes to their homes. Actually, he likes people coming home. When other kids or elders come home he seems happy, shows off his toys but does not speak to them. We often take him to parks and friend' s houses to help him socialize. I wonder what makes him not talk to others when he likes to be in company of other kids/elders. He does not seem to have any language/communication problems since he talks very well to all of us at home. It would be difficult if he has to face interviews during his school admissions next year.

I am not able to decide if there is any problem with the school or teacher as he does not tell us what happens in school.

I would like your suggestions to improve his communication with others. Pls. share if any of you have had similar experiences...

Thanks
Aruna

Plz add this point to my previous message
Don' t force your child to mixup with the other children or talk to them
You have to follow this and if you talk about your child with others donot highlight the negative points he has but highlight and tell them only positive things he makes (in your chid' s presence)--MADHU

May be your child is not adjusting with the surroundings of the school.
Try the following methods
1. Try to tell him your child hood stories like how you spent with your teacher(tell him as you moved very close with the teacher)
2. All the positive stories about the school , friends , and mainly about the teacher.
3.If possible change the school and expose him to new atmosphere (after following the above 2 methods )

RE:Shyness right or wrong?
Hello dear this is really nothing to worry as its very common and you should not take this matter as a big concern as kids at this age are normally shy and they do not like meeting new people infact they want only their friends and all with them.... - Anita [View Message]
RE:Shyness right or wrong?
According to me you should take your child to a counselor and ask her what is the exact problem as this is not common and you should get into it as soon as possible and understand the real reason behind the same, please do not ignore this its a request.... - Anaida [View Message]

RE:Shyness right or wrong?
Hi dear i can understand this issue as the same was the case with my son and till the age of 14 he was like this then someone told me to put him in personality development course and after doing so there was a complete change in his body language and he was totally different.... - Anaida [View Message]
