Hi Avi,

How are you doing? The info I have on effacement vs dilation is such --- effacement is the process of the cervix thinning....after the cervix has completed thinned out(i.e 100% effaced) then the process of dilation begins....effacement is thus measured in percentages and dilation in cm.

This is what my doc explained to me, coz they said I was not dilated as yet...I got the same info from babycenter, but it might be wrong, let's see what info the others have..:-)

Hi Suni, hope you are doing well..and getting ready for the big day thats just around the corner for u..

Thanks to you guys for clearing it up for me... I talked to my child birth prep instructor about it yesterday after I read your message and she did confirm what you said..

I always thought that effacement and dilation are one and the same..but we learn new things every day I guess... :)
Thanks

However u can start dialting with no effacement.100% effacement is not a pre-requisite for dilation to start.
Imagine cervical dilation as an opening allowing #of fingers to widen it.So if the opening admits 1 finger it means 2 cm dilated&so on!
Effacement is like the thick cervical rim thinning out to different percents so starting from thick to fully effaced means cervix is paper thin&ready to allow baby to slip thru!
Sorry girls didn't mean to lecture so much!Sometimes I sure do get carried way!

My understanding of effacement and dilation are same as yours.
