The main cause of stretch marks during pregnancy is hormonal changes. As the skin stretches in pregnancy and expands, the elastin fibers also get stretched. this results in unsightly stretch marks.

The physical stretching of the skin, along with hormonal factors are the likely cause of stretch marks. What happens is that rapid stretching of the skin causes the middle layer of skin to break in places, allowing the deeper skin layers to show through, forming stretch marks.
