I just read your message to Ashra..and thought your dream was funny...you will surely not have to wait in line in any parking lot. :)

but, I heard (I could be completely wrong)that if the AFP levels are found to be high earlier in the pregnancy, they will usually do the induction after the 37th week..... did your doc mention anything like that????????

In any case, there wont be any line whatsoever you would have to wait in...... :)

Hi girls. What would I do without you! Thx so much for telling me about NST n AFP levels. We do have the tests here too but they are termed differently, hence the confusion. My doc didn't mention about the triple test (down syndrome and other abnormalities test) and by the time I went to the hospital I wanted to register in, I was gone 20 weeks. So they suggested if I went for the test and it came positive, I would have to go for another detailed test and if that came positive too, I would have to be induced and deliver prematurely, i.e. terminate pregnancy, but not like abortion! I was petrified, very very tense, but then hubby and I decided against the test and decided to leave it on fate. So hoping that all stays well with the baby.
Take care.
Simmi

Hi All. I have not heard of NST or AFP levels, clueless! So surely you guys are in safe hands. Do enlighten me about it, seeing that AB had to have a C-section due to NST, I am even more eager to learn about it all. Thx.
Over here in UK, they induce labour after 41 weeks are crossed. So really only one week over and they induce you. Let's hope none of us have to be induced and baby comes in time on their own.
Would you think baby gets distressed if labour is induced? Cause distress causes docs to suggest c-section, so kind of nervous at the prospect of induction!!
Have a good weekend.

Hi Simmi,

I am not an expert but this is based on my experience & information found on the net. The AFP test was done in my 19th week. This test is done in the second trimester and measures three parameters:

alpha-fetoprotein (AFP)
hCG &
estriol

I had a high level of hCG in combination with a low level of AFP suggesting a chromosomal abnormality(Down syndrome (extra chromosome #23)). So, went through a test called Amniocentesis to confirm if it was really abnormal. It came back negative in my case. But, I still have to deal with the high level of hCG. So, going through the NST every week.

Regarding NST(Fetal Heart & Contraction Monitoring)- Both types of tests are performed to evaluate fetal heart rate and variability between beats, especially in relation to uterine contractions. The tests also indicate the frequency and strength of uterine contractions. This information is invaluable in determining how well your baby is tolerating the birth process, and if there needs to be emergency intervention.

Normal values indicate that the fetus is not in distress by showing a fetal heart rate between 120 to 160 beats per minute, with variability of 5 to 25 beats per minute from the baseline or normal fetal heart rate.

It is not uncommon for the fetal heart rate to drop slightly during a contraction, since placental blood supply is diminished under the compression of a uterine contraction, as long as the FHR recovers quickly once the contraction has stopped.

What do Abnormal Results Mean?
The following situations or conditions are considered abnormal results, and may be detected by your health care provider (by monitoring the data from these tests):

Cord compression (there is no free blood flow to the fetus)
Fetal heart block (where there is a block of electrical flow within the heart muscle causing an altered heart rhythm)
Fetal malposition
Fetal hypoxia (insufficient oxygen supply to the fetus)
Infection (monitoring can suggest presence of infection, but is not diagnostic)
Uteroplacental insufficiency (insufficient oxygen exchange between the uterus and the placenta)
Fetal distress
Abruptio placenta

Hope this helps,
Vindhya

Hey Simmi, NSTs are done regularly only if you experience certain medical conditions such as gestational diabetes or if you've found to have a bit higher level of AFP.. also, if you are having twins...
If you feel fewer movements than usual, they will usually do a non stress test to see if everything is alright with baby (monitor the heart beat for an hour or so to see if it is ok)..

And, As far as I know, I dont think induction of labor causes fetal distress..oxytocin is released by our body during natual labor and pitocin (a synthetic form of oxytocin) does it for us during induced labor.... the baby can get distressed during natual birth too, so it is quite hard to predict anything...
the only thing with pitocin is that labor could be longer and harder...

Anyways... I hope we dont have to go through any of it...and hope our babies come out by themselves whenever they are ready... :)

Hi Avi,

I didn't want to bother you all with my wierdest dreams everyday. I am glad that the parking lot thing was just a dream. You won't believe, I was behind Shreyu in the line.

Hmm, back to the high hCG/AFP level thing. As you say, doctors never mention what we really need to know. I had no idea about that. Will ask her tomorrow. Like I told you before, she did mention that anything can happen anytime.

They are doing the NST every week for this very reason. For the baby's sake, I don't mind getting induced in the 37th week.

Thanks for the information.

Avi

that is way too long..and that would be very close to torturous....and anyone who can wait that long is truly patient...

I also heard that waiting for more than 2 weeks is not good, cause the placenta will start getting old and will not function properly enough to provide the baby with enough oxygen and other nutrients... so not a good idea to wait..

I hope we dont have to wait at all...we'll know soon enough.. :)

Avi,

I will definitely keep you all updated about tomorrow's appointment.

I've heard about this lady who was against induction & finally got her labor pains during her 44th week! I guess, your mom might be right that the babies will definitely come once the 10th (11th?) month is completed.

In my opinion, we can wait until one-two weeks after due date, then definitely go for induction. Otherwise it will be a long wait and the delivery would get difficult too as the baby will be much bigger.

I hope none of us have to wait until we complete our 10th month.. no, that wont be too nice...9 and 1/2 is long enough..
If it were to happen to me, I would also have to admit to my mom that I was wrong and not her...:)

I hope your little one is out soon after your mom gets here...
Keep us updated with ur appointment tomorrow.. Good luck

Hey Avi,

Maybe your mom is right. You know, don't call me crazy but the truth is we all go through 10 months of pregnancies not only 9. Actually, after 37th week your 10th month starts. But, since ages it's counted as 9 months and I don't know why they don't call it to 9 1/2 or 10 month pregnancy.
I have my pregnancy calendar on babyzone and it shows I will be starting my 10th month this sunday, which is end of my 37th week.
Also, I am getting scared by reading msgs on oct board, ppl r late there. I want the baby out and not yet either, since waiting for my mom.
Vindhya, Good luck with your appt tomorrow, I have mine also tomorrow.

Vindhya, good luck with your appointment tomorrow... Keep us updated..I am sure everything will turn out just fine....

Friends - through thick and thin remember.. so funny or otherwise - do share whenver you want to.. :)

Like you guys, I dont mind the baby being out after the 37th week too.. but we can never tell...reading the messages on the oct board is starting to be scary for me...
my sweet, sensitive mommy says to me yesterday, on my b'day, that someone told her that sometimes baby's dont come out till after one completes their 10th month (not 9th, but 10th)...
I almost yelled at her and said that a sensible doctor will not wait for 10 months to be complete.. A wrong to thing to say to a pregnant woman who feels that she is finally get to where she wanted to be for a long long time.. :) my mom...aarrghhhhh

Vindhya, dont worry too much about the doc..cause they do have high standards when it comes to patient care.... some countries dont even offer AFP tests, so we are in good hands.....
also, the show i watched was about pregnancy in women over 35.... so in addition to other factors (levels, NST results) it could also be the age...
so you are doing alright...
talk to your doc, just to get it off of your mind..
I hope i didn't cause you to be worried unnecessarily...

Since Shreyu had twins, I had to wait for a loooong time. I remember her asking if I wanted to go ahead, I said I would wait and it was not a problem. Arshiya, are you reading this?

Avi, discovery channel cannot be wrong. Now I am scared, what if the doctor is not taking my case seriously!!!
Hope she does.

Vindhya, I could be totally wrong but I surely do remember watching something on the discovery channel that mentioned it...do talk to your doc about it....

It might also depend on how high the levels were too and the results of your weekely NSTs...

Behind Shreyu, :) that's even worse....she has to have two babies..so your wait will surely be longer...so funny...
