Joint Family:What is your idea of God?

Friends,
I know this is a very vast topic and everybody has his own views on this and there is no right and wrong here. But still i want to hear everybody' s view on this. I also want you guys to share your way of spending time with him. For me i really find it difficult to spend a lot of time doing prayer etc but i don' t criticize who does it. I think i m more people oriented person rather then God oriented person.

Hi All,

This is really a nice topic.
We always pray to god. I am more sensitive towards people than jsut doing the pooja path.

but it happened to me few days back. I was driving and one street boy came running and hit the truck which was quite far from my car. He was jsut 4-5 years old. He was about to die because of the hit, somehow, one person came and just kept his hand on his forehead and closed his eyes and prayed something. We all thought he must be some \" baba\" sort of person, so we just rushed to teh hospital with that kid. But till we reached the hospital, the blood flowing from his forehead was stopped!!! The doctor did a small surgery, and that boy is surviving...

It was a miracle... who was that person??? what did he do to that boy by jsut keeping hand on his forehead??? How did the bleeding stop???

I totally believe in GOD., but if I just kept praying and did not take the boy to th ehospital, would he be alive?? I belive that God is in our mind, heart and hands... God makes us think, feel and do things the right way!

Theres so much to write more, but may be in the next post :)

Subject:  Read Deepak Chopra book

Friends,
I read all the postings and got an idea that all of us have got some concepts about God, we all believe in him and have different ways of communicating with him. Inspite of that we have a lot of questions , some which have answers and some of which dont.I would like to share with you all a book which I read and which changed my way of thinking about God and all our fantasies. The title of the book is ' Power,Freedom and Grace' by Deepak Chopra. He is a very well known author and also a physician, he has contributed many writings on spiritual books and Yoga. The summary of the book is that all the things that exist in this Universe, including us all are' One ' and this world even though it seems real, is actually virtual. We have to flow with the nature and feel ' one' with everyone, even with the inanimate objects. Also whatever we think, also count as much as actions count, so we must not think bad about anyone, and know that the same divine soul exists in the other person as it exists inside us.This world is Gods play and we all are playing different roles, it may be good or bad, but to attain Moksha, we have to rise above the good and the bad, and not judge anyone.Only God has the right to judge. We should always live in the present moment and not dwell either in the past or future. Also we should not even worry about any happenings or anticipated problems, situations, because by worrying, we are not trusting the good forces of nature, and we go against the power of nature. By living in the present moment, and being Happy, we flow with the power of nature, and great miracles or Coincidences happen . This is how God communicates with us. We should try to communicate with our inner soul and also remind ourselves always that everything that exists , is all ONE (Advait)This way, we will not heel hatred for others , or jealousy and we will never feel alone. Every living being on this earth is divine and no one is more or less important than the other. We all are complete entities, and we should be happy for what we are.
Please read the book by Deepak Chopra.I highly recommend it to anyone who is curious to Know God.

Nice topic to share views. Glad that I got time to read all our friends views . Good work Saheli , Somehow I felt it’s a different outlook on alien’s concept. Actually In my school, my Sanskrit sir used to reveal this kind of surprising ideas on god.

Personally, I believe in god verymuch and I dont think much on whether he exist or not. SOME SUPREME POWER IS THERE WHICH RULE OUR LIVES! I had many, many living examples and experiences from believing in god. God has proved me his existence many times. If I start listing it would be endless.

I too came from a Brahmin family and my mom believed in god deep from heart and dad too.So I started believing in god . I deeply believe in my Hindu religion’s Customs and traditions because I read a good book which revealed a great scientific fact behind every tradition and sentiment. So I think, there was a great ‘Yuga’ where humans had magical powers .They must have gained for following Satya & Dharma in their lives. Those might not be magical powers but might be science which we didn’t invent yet. Probably we might have lost roots and not gaining a weapon to win our inner selfishness and immatured thoughts. So, Still we remain in this materialistic world. Lets hope we’ll be getting in to the previous yugas where human beings lived with good heart and not with sheer selfishness.

Saheli, not doing any harm to anyone by any means is ur policy and u told it many times. I sincerely praise ur efforts to follow this simple phenomenon which give great results for ourselves and for the ppl surrounding us .I want to know all of ur views on bringing up child with great values. Lets discuss it next week. I’m teaching my child good human values and many a things… Even my mom used to tell me about these moral values. But I suffer a lot from those values because ,sometimes I feel I might fail in this game of life if I don’t be little practical in this materialistic world. Have no time to explain exactly , But definitely this is the topic I wanted to discuss with all of u..Which is related to previous para where I discussed following SAtya And Dharma give humans magical powers and that is the right place for GOD to live with us in his real form.

See u all later.

It' s really interesting to know about every body' s idea. Let me tell about my self also. I m from a Rajput family in U.P. Mine is intercaste and interstate marriage. My husband is Brahmin. My family is not so ritualistic and religious( There are Pooja Paths etc ) but My husband’s family follow is just opposite of it. Since I always studied science and had been out for most of the time during studies, so never got inclined to the traditional way of worshipping God. My problem is that I think everything from logical point of view. And I find it more logical to help people be good to other don’t harm anybody, love and respect elders then spending a lot of time in Pooja path. I too believe in the supreme power but don’t feel a need to spend a lot of time to do prayer etc. But I always have lots and lots of question in my mind for which I never get answers. I m not able to form one believe system till now. Sometime feel that the people who believe in one God or Guru they are more happy and satisfied.

But after our discussion I m sure of one things the idea has changed over the generation. Our mother’s and MIL’s definitely has a different view on the same Topic. What is will be referred as ..We are moving forward or we are loosing our values????

God is an extremely personal entity for me,that' s why I hesitated to post here.
To me God is everywhere, everytime everything in this world/universe.God is also deep inside me,and I only need to call out very intensely for Him to make his prsence felt.
i too shy from elaborate ritualistic worship although brought up that way.Sometimes I feel ego can come in during external ritualistic worship as in -so and so does not know how to do puja proerly we are abetter family we know all thisand follow much better.
Anyone who believes in his/her conscience truly, follows truth and non violence in thought worda and action to me is a great person.
All religions are only different paths to reach the same goal.
I beleive that al of us bear the consequences for our actions so do good in the present and not dwell on the past or future.
Random thoughts, too difficult to say more.

Subject:  NEWS!

I was going thru this post and was chatting with my hubby in India. He was telling me about what was there in the NEWS ... Pratibha Patil as the first woman President and all ... and another news .. about a 4 yr old Indian girl Upasna .. who is claiming she was ' Kalpana Chawla' in her last birth! Talk about re-incarnation!
This little girl knows the incidents happed in Kalpana' s life, and is telling about her death as well .. that the soul was just thrown out of the body when the crash happened ... it was so unexpected and unleblievable for the soul that Kalpana returned back asap.

This girl was born 30 mins after the crash. It was on Indian news channels that day for a long time. I dont know how true all this is. Just wnated to share the news with you all!

Manee - interesting topic...

and Saheli - Equally interesting reply..:) never thought of the alien angle..:)

Abt me - I am a Rajput and was brought up in an Arya Samaji kind of a household...my grandparents were Arya Samajis and freedom fighters.

My mom never believed in any rituals or long poojas...I learned from her that if your heart and actions are pure then that is the best prayer of all. On festival days, we would stand in front of the few Gods and Goddesses that we had...) and fold our hands and pray in our hearts...I learnt to talk to God that way since I was a child...during the day also if something good or bad happened, I would talk earnestly to God to make it right...

My dad used to take us to a hanuman temple sometimes..and I remember those visits more for the yummy besan ladoos than for any pious or holy thoughts..:)

It was only after I left home for study and then work purpose that I started going to the temple more regularly. Looking back, I think it was more because I was lonely in a new city and going to the temple and praying/talking to God made me feel better.

My few basic ideas about God -
(1) God is an energy force - something that encompasses the entire bramhand (universe).

(2) God is all around us and inside us

(3) I also believe in Karma. That is why one should never wish ill of others. I like the saying - \" uska kiya, uske saath, mera kiya, mere saath\" . But at the same time you should not suffer cruelty or bad behavior from others because that is in a way enabling the tormentors.

(4) You can reach God in multiple ways - by meditation (sadhana), by praying (with full devotion and understanding like Meera..not just reciting some prayers from the lips but not feeling it in the heart), by good karma or by following a good guru' s teachings. No one way is superior or inferior...whatever works for you...A person who has a good heart and helps others has a better chance at realizing God (or attaining nirvana, mukti) than somebody who sits in front of God for 5 hrs a day but behaves badly to his family members and others. As Guru Raidas said - \" man changa to kathouti mein ganga\" .

5) I believe that what we consider as incarnations of God (like Ram, Krishna etc) might just have been very good human beings and because of their great deeds, they were accorded the status of a divine being by their court writers and singers and over years, they came to be revered as gods..E.g. Gandhi might very well be revered as a saint or God 400-500 years from now.

6) Something like Ganesh' s head might just be a physical deformity or maybe they had amazing surgery techniques then..) who knows...(btw i like the alien theory also..as I said, who know.) )

One should always analyze, question, understand and then accept any belief etc...in this I like Buddha' s (and even the current dalai lama' s) teachings. He said that the best dharma is that you should always question the validity of an accepted truth that you disagree with or don' t understand. It is only by analyzing deeper that you can achieve true understanding of anything..be it God or Nirvana or anything else.

If people say that you should do something just because it is written in an ancient text, that should not be reason enough. There should be a rational explanation for doing it. Your mind should question and find answers and in this process you will find more spiritual awakening inside your soul than you would have by blindly following some text or orders.. :)

this is just my take and I can write lots more...but will take a breather now...:)

Its interesting and nice to see that though there may be diffrence in perception about God, finally it converges into same thing.
Wonderful thoughts!

I liked " uska kiya, uske saath, mera kiya, mere saath" !

No, my reply is not too long. It looks like that because i hv new lines and gaps -) lol

Great topic indeed. Couldnt resist replying!

Thoda mahaul banate hain
----------------------------
Me brought up in brahmin family (poojas, rituals, believes etc), influence of mythological stories, astrological facts, education - science and software engg.

Developing a software proved to me that we can create an entity and allow it to operate in a set of rules outside which entity will ‘die’.

Ab, mere vichaar
-------------------
Disclaimer: Apologies if my thoughts about God hurt anybody' s sentiments, but I have the same respect as others for God, just a different outlook. I am typing in short and in a hurry!

- Devlok, indralok, gandharvalok, Gods, Apsaras - and then there’s Bramha Vishnu Mahesh (BVM).
- Mythology shows some God with elephant head, many with more than 2 hands, some have 3 to 4 heads.
- Gods .. Narad ....travels from one ‘Lok’ to another in milisecs.
- Air, sun, water are ‘Gods’.
- Demons and Danav-lok .... demons look fearful, are huge.
- Gods have magical weapons and mantras.
- ‘G O D’ = Generator, Operator, Destructor. Lord Shankara=destructor, Bramha=generator Vishnu=operator.
- Hanuman, Krishna and Rama are believed to be Avtaars of God, created to kill evil people, and meeting of Hanumana and Rama was destined!
- Our 1000 years = Brahma’s 1 sec. Some time difference (do they see us moving like a FastFWD motion? lol).

Something like this is the version we Hindus hv heard.
Here is my version -

- Just like earth, there exist other planets with life on them.
- Species on those planets probably look little different (aliens?, so we see them as elephant headed, horse headed, four hands, four heads, etc ... demons are huge in size)
- won’t you give some name to aliens on mars? Yup. Those species are called Dev, species on earth are called Manav, species on yet another planet are called Danav -- something like that?
- they are technologically much more advanced than us ... they can travel in (our) milliseconds
- they have advanced weapons that seem almost magical to us (my great grandma too never thought there cld exist anything like a cellphone with camera)
- Lets call these planets are the Indralok, danav lok, gandharva lok etc.
- Those people are probably too large in size as compared to us and their time varies from us (1000 yrs = 1 sec).
(Remember samudra manthan? - their tortoise and snake was so large that it could churn our ocean)
- The BVM are above all these. Don’t know how they are related to those other planets, may b some relation. BVM created earth and/or life on earth and these Loks are helping in. There is one more supreme power above evrything, some believe it as a spot, some as Om. Everything will finally end up in this supreme power.

- Consider life on earth as some kind of maya or game or software or matrix ..... created by these people (?).
- There is an entity called SOUL or Aatma that is put into a form called body which can be animal/human/bird etc. This soul is given a chance to do good by putting it into a human body. Then depending on karma or deeds, the soul is judged. And is given another form in next birth - again human or animal etc.

- or may be, earth and life on earth is just virtual. It doesnt really exist (and thats why we dont see Gods and their planets, and thats why they say that we cant go to heaven in human form).
- those who have seen Matrix movie can relate to this thought
- and if this is virtual, that is why the Gods need to take Avtaars to come into our world, they cant come directly. Avtaars can be linked to ' Instances of objected oriented programs' in software lingo.
- this is virtual, and thats why the soul does not have a physical form like us, and it enters and exits the matrix.
- this is all virtual, that is why they say, be a saint to get ' Mukti' - escape from this cycle of life and death.

- That is why we are told to do good deeds or karma. That is why we hear all this is maya.
That is why ‘death’ is not the end of everything. It’s just the end of the form.

- Manavas have been given powers but they are hidden. Gradually we are exploring and discovering our strengths, and advancing in science, technology and others and moving closer to their levels.

- i hv my reasons for prayers too. Will tell that some other time. I do pray.
----------------------------------------
My theory may be true or untrue, but all will agree to one thing ... there is someone ... ONE entity ... behind this whole show ... and we give him different names like God, Bhagwaan or Allah.

He is running this show and we pray him.

So we should try and be nice to all, avoid hurting anyone unnecessarily, not even a street dog.
It will benefit us all irrespective of the theories.

Avoid passing bitter words to MIL BIL SIL IL and look at big picture of life rather than worrying about little materialistic things.

Think about my theory for a sec ... and then think how deep we are busy in life. How little things we worry about .... matching shoes, dresses, accesories, movies, tasty food , weightloss, ...endless list.

From one angel .. life seems a Timepass. We all are just passing time till death. Just to get into the vicious cycle again.

From another angel .... if this is all true, then why not enjoy life while we are here. When God has given this to us, lets enjoy it!

Upto individual to decide.

Whats your idea of God, Manee? Raj, Ritika, Dia, SR, ... others, I would love to hear your thoughts too ...
