Hi all,
I had my 36th week appt today and the doctor checked me internally. I am 0% effaced but 1cm Dialated.
I did not understand only coz I thought you can't be dialated untill you are 100% effaced. Please do share what you all think on this. I will do some study on net also. I did asked my doctor couple of times that i don't understand what he means by that but he said that's what it is.

I am really confused. I also had my GBS. Rest all was fine.

Hi Ruchika,

Yesterday, I watched a 'stages of labor' video that didn't mention that first-timers usually dilate after effacing. But, I do remember reading whatever Priya has mentioned somewhere. Whatever the theory is, I guess it differs from person to person. If your doctor says everything is OK, then you should be OK too.

I think you and Arshiya will give the good news at the same time.

Dilation if the opening up of the cervix, and effacement is its shortening. Usually for first time moms, effacement occurs before dilation, and for second etc., its supposedly the other way around. But there is no set rule or anything. So you're probably doing just fine!

Hey Ruchika, at first I thought effacement and dilation were one and the same and soon realized that it wasn't.. but I was watching discovery channel the other day and this one woman was experiencing dilation and effacement at the same time (she was 80% effaced and 4 cms dilated) so I guess what your doc said must be right..
will surely keep you updated with more info...

Hey,

I think your doc must be right. As long as I know, you can be dilated before your cervix is completely effaced.
But, surely would read on net more about this.
