Due Date Club October 2003:Help me to convince hubby-PlayPen vs Crib
2003-09-04
Name: Nick Bose

I cannot convince my husband that the playpen is not a first few months solution to infant's sleeping. Its just for napping not for overnight sleeping.

Crib is for over night sleeping. It is more stable.
So help me with the pros and cons of playpen vs crib for infant's sleep.

I prefer a crib and everyday we argue about it as I cannot tell him a valid reason for using playpen vs crib .Someone please help me ,if I can tell
him a valid reason/reasons I am sure he will be convinced.

Well even we were also looking at a playpen as an option but realised that the bassinet in it is maximum suitable until 3mths&then though the reviews state we can put the baby to sleep it doesn't look convenient. It has no sturdy base or mattress feature so after 3 mths it just doesn't look comfortable for sleeping. It wld be useful to leave the baby for playing&hanging out but ultimately you wld need another sleeping arrangement for baby.
A good playpen is almost the same price as a crib so down the road you may feel the need for a crib so tell hubby dear better invest in one solid item frm now only.Gluck!

I am not so sure how sturdy playpens are even if they come with bassinets never checked them out..they look like made of some mesh cloth, so would doubt the support for the spine for an infant.
Ask ur doctor/nurse/pediatrician if u meet any of them, maybe they will guide u.
If not, check the sites online where they sell playpens/cribs the comments/reviews may help.
or search for safety tips in playpens for infants in google/yahoo..should come with infant safety listings for playpens..from what i know playpens are for babies to crawl around and play in it. I do know there are playpens with bassinets in it..i don't know how much of a sturdy base it has and if it provides adequate back support. I am sure babies will outgrow the added bassinet, then u will have to get a crib.
check www(.)mysafefamily(.)com/thelaboroflove/msfcontent(.)asp?pm=sd&sid=15
maybe others can help u with more tips..or ask moms,co workers ( am sure most american moms would own it) who already own a playpen/crib and know more about it..
Hope research online helps.
