if a baby passes hard stool or gets constipated...elderly ladies in family gives anema to them ...at home they put soap...inside the rectum ...n in few sec ....babies pass stool..or i hv seen nowadays u get ready made anema' s for infants..in chemists..i had seen one person buying it...i asked the cheminst he explained me what it is...its made of plastic....u put inside rectum....
tell me if its safe to gv to small babies...
can any 1 help pls? ..
i hv seen many people doing this....
but never done with my baby....

if its not safe then what is the other alternative ...

Hi gauri,
My baby was severely constipated sometime back. we too tried the soap bits and it did work.. however, since soap has more checmicals, we swtiched to just castor oil. take a bit of castor oil in a bowl and dip your little finger nicely in it (plz ensure that your hands are washed and nails are cut before you do this) insert your little finger in the baby' s rectum, oil the area nicely for a few times and baby will pass stools in less than 5 mins.
secondly, glycerine suppositories are available in pharmacies for infants, buy those and insert one in the baby' s rectum, again baby should pass stools in a few mins.
Also, though I am aware of the controvery of feeding babies honey (i refused initially to let my mil give this to my baby, but after i saw her upset and extremely cranky, I said forget it, if it will give her relief lets give it a shot) , the choice to do this is entirely yours, take one big drop of castor oil and mix it with a big drop of honey.. feed this to your baby first thing every morning, the castor oil will help to keep the baby' s intestines smooth. After I have started this, touchwood my baby has not had constipation. Also, you should try feeding your baby some luke warm water a few times a day (anywhere between 30-50 ml at one time, let your baby decide that) and your baby will be relieved of constipation.

Honey - some form of honey can contain deadly botulism spores. But they changed the formula for karo syrup because of this, to make it safer - so if you can get karo for constipated babies, that's healthy.

Soap - so long as you only use ordinary bathroom soap, preferably glycerin soap with no added perfume, it is totally safe to use making homemade suppositories. (Usually on vacations we use soap if child cannot "do smellys").
