Thanks pinki,TA and Archie :)

I am aged 23.The lab Dr said dont worry too much, but I cant rule out risk as it seems little high for your age.

Anu,
this ratio is normally taken from the values obtained by taking into consideration of estriol, BhCG and AFP values. If your risk is one of teh 660 patients then it's low but no one can say it's not going to be there mainly because the AFP test estimates 90% accurately and therefore 10% chances are there that patient might not identify downsyndrome for baby and also sometime positive test can be wrong as well and that in fact baby is not carrying risk for downsyndrome.
To put this things together you will be offered LevelII ultrasound and amniotic fluid levels will be considered as a marker along with checking baby head to toe for developmental progress. If that comes OK then 95% chances are that baby is healthy but still it's 5% possibility that baby can have downsyndrome.
The only way to assure there is no risk is by Amniocentesis. But this is offered if "Triple Marker test is positve" and that follow up ultrasound is agreeable to AFP results from triple marker test.

I think you want to discuss this in more detail with your Dr.

Anu and Pinky, there is no reason to blame for choosing this test. You should be rather happy and proud because you are doing to assure that baby is healthy and no concern. Avoiding tests can be bad if baby is born with some troubles, I think the pain from seeing baby going through each day of life is more than facing troubles and agony with AFP results.

Hi Anu,
As archie is saying you can consider your test as negative. Please dont worry.
My AFP test result would come in 2-3 weeks. I am too very much scared, cursing myself why did i go for it. :(
Everything would be fine with u anu.

Hi Anu,

I am from the Sept board.
I was similarly confused with the ratio. I asked the nurse a couple of times what exactly that meant. She then clarified that my ratio was that of a 28 year old. That was good since I am 32. Your numbers get lower with age. It helped me to understand it somewhat better. You could probably ask your doctor/nurse what age the ratio of 1:660 corresponds to.

Hope this is not confusing.
Best wishes, TA

Anu,
it depends on maternal age and exact gestation when the blood was taken. However if the risk factor is 1:660 then it's considered to be a negative test. Have this confirmed from your OB and enjoy remaining pregnancy.
