Due Date Club January 2004:Epidural ?

Is it safe to take epidural during delivery? I have heard that taking an epidural increases the chance of having a c-section. Is that true?
I read somewhere that studies show that 37% of people who took epidural went through C-Section and only 6% of people who did not take epidural had to go through c-section. Is there any way that c-section can be avoided?

I'm currently pregnant with my second baby. I would suggest you go into delivery with a rough plan but don't have a firm thoughts as things can change dramatically at the last moment. I had an epidural with my first one and got only 2-3 stitches and didn't have to go thru a C-section. So it differs from person to person. So go in with an open mind and have a healthy baby. Good luck

Hi Shilpi,
I used to walk around 3 miles everyday and this is the link of streching exercises I used to do till 7th month but after that it became very difficult to bend and strech.

Hi Shilpi,
Your doubt may be correct because I have to go through the c-section because of the same reason. Everything was going smooth untill I took the epidural. As soon as i took it my BP increased and the babys heart rate jumped from 156 to 180. So doctors immediately decided to go for the c-section although I was 8cms dilated. What worse you can think off :((((! anyway when i started to get the contractions..it was unbearable. But as soon as I took the epidural(at 4cms) I didn't feel any pain after that. So I would suggest go for it and don't worry about anything. Every body reacts differently to the medicines. So don't worry about it. There is no such method you can avoid c-section. I used to do a lot of walking and streching excercises to avoid the c-section but at the time of the delivry you never know what is going to happen. Let everything in the God's hand and think for the best. Anyway wish you all the best for the delivery.

Thanks Kavita. I have anyway decided not to opt for epidural and just go through it no matter how hard it might be, cause most of my friends who took an epidural ended up having a c-section. How much of walking you used to do per day? and what were the stretching ecercises?
Thanks, Shilpi

Kidney
Hello:
My 20 week ultrasound also showed an enlarged kidney. The good news is that since it is only one side, chances are that he will \";grow out of it\"; and if there's a problem it will resolve itself. I would suggest going back in 4 weeks from when you had the first to see if the kidney is of normal proportion. I went back for the next one, and the ultrasoun... - CNoel [View Message]

just an advice
Hey Kavita,

I'd say you get the ultrasound done so you will be able to see what is going on. Vaginal ultrasound is a good idea too.

Take care,
