was meaning to write you yesday, but couldnt make itup to complte the post...here are some pointers..
1.respect her apetite but try to divert her and see if diverting her to activities, playing her fav program or reading or showing pictures in the books makes her open her mouth.
a 3year old can understand diff videos and books,,so make her realze that eating healthy is growing strong and such stories,,and it gives her interest in food..
2. 3year is just the right candidate to eat herself..see if she is interested in that.let her mess if she does it,,allow her to pick her fav from the food you have made and let her eat herself !
3. keep her in a regular routine and make sure her physical activities are good enough to make her feel hungry. but not tired !
since her apetite per serving is less, replace her snack time to mini meals ! it will help.make her all her meals includes the major serving of fat, protein, fibr and enough vitamins or minerals..inshort,,it should include 1vegie, 1meat/or vegie protein,1 grain 1 lentil.
4.avoid offering milk or fruit with meals. let them be a good mighty serving and a seperate serving.
offer lentil soup, tomato soup some 30mins before meal, dont offer too much just decide the qty based on her intakes,,let the soup be 10% of what she eats,,and thn give her a break of 30mins or so...
5.make your food interesting and appealing...sky is the limit in imaginatn and colours of vegies !! allow her to touch and feel the food,,let it be fun...
give differnt shapes of pastas, rotis and cut the vegies in diff shapes,,and name them while making her eat,see if that activity helps somewhat.
kids of this age, are also more interested in flavours, see if adding or deducting a particular flavour in your food might bring her back to sticking to her meals.sometimes we too dont like the stereo type of typical food...
acc to her birthwght, her wght at 3years is less, considerng the Body mass and like you described,,she should be around 13kgs...but achevble..she is 3kgs behind..
6.offer her healthy alternatives, let her meals include cheese, and proteins..let her minimeals include some sprouts or some good animal fat proteins,.it will help.add in protns to whatever form yu can in her diet.
7. put in some soy kheema and soy pwders(often available in health stores,,look for the ones that are used for cooking) and in her rice, dals or curries, put some cheese or ghee while serving..
offer her varieties and colourful alternatives like cheese idlis, cheese parathas, ghee and idlis, buttered rice with nuts(check for allergy to nuts), meats with vegies sauted in some butter,,let meat be the part of her everyday meals.
8. offer her 1 egg atleast once a day. make sure she eats the whole of it(esp the yolk)
3year old can easily eat 1 egg omelette,,,with some veiges in it.
avoid offering her cabbage, or light green vegetables(all cabbage family vegies)...addin to her dals, brocoli shreds and some cheese sprinkles.
a 3year old should be able to drink around 2glasses of 2% or 3% milk..since your daughter is skiny and is 2-3kgs less, offer her whole milk !
her bmi seems to be very less..so offer her fat servings in all you give.
9. you can also start her on pediasure as a replacement to 1 serving of cows milk and not as a sole nutrition.generally i dont recmnd pediasure but your daughter is 3kgs behind and so she needs as one serving of 5oz.
10. in her milk, add jr complan or some milk additive that might appeal her.
11. allow her to help you cook dinner,,let her mess around, chop or mash some food,, no problem,,make her sniff spices(esp the cardamom,,and put abit in food,,)see if it helps..
12. make it a deal, she eats wat u give her, finishes her meals, and she gets her fav food as next meal! if her fav food isnt healthy, offer little as a namesake to the next meal!
13. offer her fruit juices, atleast once a day and a serving of fruit, esp the banana and figs,,they are good for wght gain and increases body mass too !
14. last but not the least, add in to her curries, and her dals, some wheat bran and some wheat germ and offer her more altnertives of grains like whole wheat, multigrains and it should help..
good luck.
