Leaky Breasts and a Long Feeder
Mommy H is worried baby K is unsatisfied with her milk because she feels she is not producing enough. She has a 1 month old baby and she can collect 1 ounce of milk every pumping session plus she has leaky breasts. This implies that our mommy has milk. We observed her expressed milk was watery. There is more fore milk (watery part) than hind milk.
Our baby K wrestles her mommy' s breasts and struggles before latching on. But once assisted to the breast, patience and proper positioning baby K sucked contentedly. He sometimes stops drinking probably because of mommy' s strong ejection reflex. He feeds for long hours so we suggested to mommy to find a comfortable position.
Mommy H complains that baby K easily gets hungry. And seems like he never gets full from direct breastfeeding that' s why they give expressed breast milk through the bottle.
This problem arises because baby K doesn' t get enough hindmilk because of mommy' s over supply. To correct this problem we asked mommy to reduce pumping and increase breastfeeding frequency. We need to drain out the breast completely to get the high calorie hind milk.
We also instructed mommy that crying doesn' t necessarily mean \" mommy I' m HUNGRY!\" . Crying might mean \" I' m cold\" \" I want to dance\" \" I want you to sing\" etc. We want to be patient with baby and not be tempted to give the bottle.
For our long feeder we need to find a comfortable position to nurse in. Be ready with snacks, water and a good book to read while waiting to finish.
