Due Date Club October 2003:Radhika, thanks a bunch for the fax

Hi Radhika,

Thanks a ton for the fax. Yesterday, my nutritionist put me on a horrible diet. The numbers of my three hour GTT said I dont have GD but the first hour number was high and so the doctor wants me to be careful. I guess they are worried that the baby can grow too big, and that will warrant a caesarean delivery. I guess it is only for two months more and we should be able to manage. Let me know how you are doing with the diet.

Hey Suni,

Good to hear from you. I really hope the plans were helpful. I am sure you'll get used to the diet soon. Unfortunately for me, I have been losing weight rapidly over the past two weeks. My nutritionist increased my fat intake, but it feels like I have lost my appetite.

You take care and eat what works for you.

Regards,
Radhika

i know the thanks is for Radhika(Nov) but since i and nikki have adjusted to the diets by now..giving u tips and sites that may be really be helpful..
1) since we need 2000 cal and to balance diet..check this very informative to indians..
www*diabetesindia*com/diabetes/regional_diets.htm , check the whole site very good..gives diet to be followed for all regions..we have limitations of gms of carbs so before u implement them do calculate carbs of every item (carbs value = (sugar - fiber) shown in label)
2) There is a virutal grocery store for high sugar patients..helps a bit
www*diabetes*org/vgs/application/commercewf (virtual grocery store)
3) Most of the supermarket product labels details u will find at www*nal*usda.gov/fnic/cgi-bin/nut_search.pl

Try whole grain breads/pasta/ brown rice..till now they have filled me up and feel less hungry..suprisingly all fatty foods seem to have less fat - peanuts/nuts/peanut butter/ cheese /ricotta/sour cream..if u are a non veg its no prob...chicken/fish are best sources even egg has abs less carbs..I eat more of veg/salads just like that without any added rice/roti.
that helps too..and do take good snacks amount either sandwich/salads/eggs/etc..
never eaten egg till now in my life, but started to eat one everyday..so protein intake is kept.
As per nikki, channa, soyabean, sprouted dal good source of protein..so it will help..Don't worry , u will be fine.
Don't get stressed a lot and eat regularly. walks help a lot even 15 min. walk or any work after meal.
Take care.
Radhika

I learnt a lot in class and seeing labels for so long..not sticking to one food, though morning oatmeal has been constant for a year now.
Lunch/dinner i have now shifted to brown rice/whole wheat noodles/any sabji(cauliflower/beans/cabbage/karela/etc..)roti has more carbs so instead of normal dosa, got whole wheat flour from store (funnily here atta has more carbs than the whole wheat flour no idea why)make like a roti_dosa_uttapa with veggies..if u like that..i like eating it..i gen make 3 and sometimes have as a snack. always end with a huge bowl of salad . At work i do take a cheese sandwich with whole grain bread slices/v8 juice/ peanut butter/protein drink..if i am really hungry i eat egg(yuck.but if in doubt i do)..try to move around after a meal after dinner at 8 I do walk atleast 20 mins (if its too late), bus also gives a 10 min walk that helps..evenings my friend gen. keeps some snack for me when i am back home, she lives closeby, kids play so she always either makes omelet/carrots_peanut butter/some low carb snack. today had called the dietician about the calories count and she said as long as u don't feel weak and baby is moving u are fine..indulge in nuts and always eat carbs before u sleep else it takes sugar from ur liver becoz of the long gap of no food, so don't remain hungry.
seens many grains channa/chavli/etc..have lot more fiber content...and are filling.
Hope it helps. DOn't worry as u become more aware, u will feel better..
I was joking with my husband i can eat coconut chutney all i want (low carb) but not idli/dosa...funny...but its another two months..and I am going to keep reminding my baby ok..u better behave, zindagi mein kabhi i have never had egg, always made for husband..i broke that for two months :)
Initially felt i am going to get weak, now got used to it and am keeping my tummy half full atleast.. basically u can continue most of the diet, just have to break in smaller portions and even snacks and like smaller meals so eat well.Take care.

Hi Radhika,

Thanks a bunch for the details...since I am a vegetarian, I have to eat 4 eggs a day for my protein intake.....sounds like an invite for heart attack, right.
I eat wheat toast at breakfast or a grilled cheese sandwich, a yogurt at snack time, rotis+eggs+veggies+fruit at lunch, fruit+cottage cheese at snack, rotis+veggies+chole at dinner and a fruit as the after dinner snack.

My problem is with the morning 3 a.m, somehow like clock work my body wakes up and wants a bite, and now I am not allowed to take anything....it is so difficult coz I cant go back to sleep when hungry.

I miss idlis and dosas also.....I love eating them, and have to wait after the pregnancy to indulge!

Can you write your detailed food plan for the day?

Love
Suni
