well, i can only say that you have to experience it first hand to know what you undergo during delivery esp if ur planning a normal delivery, not a c-sec.
in my case i went into labour on friday, the doc at military hospital assured me it would be over by evening but it took me the entire night!
my little bundle of joy arrived at six o'clock in the morning. by that time my husband had alredy gone home to rest thinking he'll be back early morning.he missed his arrival by 20 mins!
well the reason it took so long, as told by the nurse was i was holding my self back during labour pain , you know clenching my fists and trying to be rigid and not letting myself loose.
so lesson learnt dont try to control the pain . it will only delay matters.

Too bad your hubby couldn't be there but am sure this time he wont miss it for anything...:)

My child birth prep class instructor said the same, if you hold your breath the cervix might close up and thus delay the delivery and praticing breathing techiniques really is worth it..
