Vindhya replied. Hi Hemani,
Don't worry about the weight gain, I am sure it is because of your diet. Hope you are coping well with your insulin shots.
Regarding steroid shots, it is not something to worry about, be happy that there is technology/medicine for everything. Your baby will be just fine.
Following is the information I found:
* Steroids are often given to help the fetus' lungs mature quicker. They cross the placenta.
* Women with diabetes often have very high blood sugars after the steroid shots. This is not a reason to avoid the shots. However, blood sugars will need to be tested frequently, and more insulin may be needed.
* When a baby is born, the lungs need to expand with air.
* Phospholipids are soapy substances that are made by the lungs. They help the lungs expand easier.
* Fetuses do not make enough phospholipids for lung expansion until about 35 weeks.
* Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), also known as hyaline membrane disease occurs when the lungs do not expand properly
RDS is treated by helping the baby breathe with mechanical ventilation (a tube that goes into the baby¡¦s lungs and is attached to a breathing machine).
* Steroids that cross the placenta are given to help the baby make phospholipids earlier.
* Two steroids are used in the United States: Betamethasone and Dexamethasone. Betamethasone is used more frequently, because fewer doses are needed.
* Two shots, usually 24 hours apart are given. The shots are given into the muscle.
* Sometimes repeat shots are given after 1 week.
* The number of repeat shots that are needed, or even necessity of the repeat shots is unknown.
* These steroids will not cause growth of facial hair or muscle development.
Hemani, this might be too much information. Please ignore whatever is not applicable.

Avi replied. Hey Hemani, sorry to hear that you have to go through with this now... but like Simmi said, if the doctor thinks it will help the baby, than it should be fine....
I have no knowledge when it comes to steroid shots during pregnancy..but will surely do some research and keep you updated..
Do keep the faith and be positive..I am sure everything will turn out just fine... stay strong for your baby...
Simmi replied. Hi Hemani. Sorry to hear about the steroid playing havoc with GD however, if the doc thinks it is imp for babies growth u should get it done. Keep the faith, the doc has to tell u everything but doesn't mean that it will play havoc with GD for sure. U could handle them both without problem too, just keep a positive mind.
About weight gain, well some gain in first, some in second and some in third trimester. However, if u think u ought to have gained more, you could try to eat more carbs (rice, pasta, bread) and loads of veg etc too.
Here in UK docs don't weigh pregnant women so there is less emphasis on the weight, however, if the fundal measurements are appropriate and doc is happy with ur weight, u shouldn't put too much worry over it.
Stress levels don't let the food work well to gain weight. So try chanting and keeping a clear head. BTW, baby will grow and take the weight irrespective of whether u show weight gain on the scale or not.
All the best for the injection and keep the faith.

Hi Hemani,
Are you still awake? Go to bed and sleep.
Keep up your positive attitude, it's the key. We are all there.
