Hi!
My doc just told me that I need to start on insulin. She at first recommended an oral drug called glyburide but I cannot take it since I am allergic to sulpha drugs.
Anyway I will be starting in a few days...do u know of anyone who is taking or took insulin and how was the pregnancy outcome...are their babies doing ok??
I am really scared of the side effects of insulin on the baby...
I am in my 28th week now and all my readings except the fasting ones are under control..my doc wants me to divide the doses during the day..any thoughts????????????????????
please help!!!!

Subject:  Info on GD

Hi Bhavna,

As far as I have heard and seen GD is only during pregnancy and usually goes away after the baby is delivered. Two of my very close friends took insulin shots during their pregnancies. Also, they did a lot of walking and dieting. Their deliveries were both normal and their children are doing just great. I think there is no real worry of being dependent on the drug after pregnancy, the diabetes just vanishes.

Best,
Raji

Bhavana,
This is your second message with pretty much same concern. I did not respond to previous one, becasue Vara did good justice to your query and I would have added nothing.
Lets speak this way there can be consequences if your readings are not controlled than taking insulin. This statement should make you feel comfortable taking insulin.
If this is about baby then you should go ahead and get insulin. You don't want baby to suffer consequences of GD. You are lucky to know you have conditions and could be treated to avoid any consequences.
Do not worry, go ahead.
Archie

bhavana,
GD is a diabetes while pregnancy and not indeed a regular diabetes so relax, you will mostly be fine.

Archie, Thanks a million for your reply..
I will be aeeing the counselor today whol will teach me how to give myself the injection....
The issue I have is that the doc has not done any ultrasounds before recommending the insulin..it is purely based on my sugar readings..
Is the baby affected so far, is she big already..I don't know..this is my second baby and my first one who is now 6 weighed 6lbs.
My ultrasound 3 weeks ago showed teh baby doing just fine.
Are there any studies to show that I may become dependent on insulin even after the baby is born????
Thanks
Bhavna

Very good doctor
Hi,

I delived a baby boy in March 2009. I consulted Dr.Chitra Ramamurthy during my pregnancy cycle. She' s one of the best doctors in Bangalore. Not many people know about her. She handled the entire process in a very professional manner. I used to visit her clinic in Jayanagar 3rd block. She is very caring and affable. She says what to do and what not to do. ... - Sandhya Rao [View Message]

So long as your baby is feeding, that' s all that really matters. These days, formulas are packed with everything the baby needs, and although it is never as good as breast milk, it' s perfectly fine. It sounds like maybe what you are missing is the bonding that breast feeding provides? My first child had both breast and bottle milk for the first 6 months, when I had a mis... - Jhumri [View Message]
