Name: Pooja Kumar

Hello, I am new to this forum and I have a question to ask..my daughter is 10 yrs and 3 months and she got her periods yesterday...I got my periods when i was 12 and I am worried that she has puberty so early in her life...she had other signs like breast development and growth of pubic hair for the past few months..so i was kind of expecting it within a year but this feels like its too early...are there any parent who has similar problem? if so can you please discuss as to what i should do now...I havent told my extended family becos they will make it a topic of fodder...thnx in advance..

Hi Pooja, do not worry there are a lot of girls these days who get hormonal changes and get their menses easily in their young age. This is because of the environment and the kind of food they eat.

It is a lil strange for a girl's cycles to start at such a small age but i don't think there is anything you can do about it. There are many reasons that can lead to this like weight and the type of food you eat.

Usually the cycles of a female start after she turns 13 but i think there is nothing wrong with maturing early. The only difference that it will create is that she will mature early and all her features will develop early.

Early development is nothing to be really worried about as every one develops in a different way and at different stages. If it is worrying you a lot you can consult her pediatrician or a gynecologist just to be safe.

Hello Pooja Kumar,
There is no need to get tensed or panic for this.Because in this days every thing was so sooner because of the intake of food we take and due to harmonal balance also.It would better you consult the doctor for it.

Hi Pooja! It is indeed true that things are happening sooner at this day and age and there is nothing to worry about. If you are very concerned, take your child to a gynaec and get it clarified. Also, at this point, ensuring that the child isn't scared and is aware of what is happening to her is very important. Discuss with her. At my daughter's school (Orchids), they screened a video about puberty and the changes a girl undergoes in this period and various do's and don'ts. This made my life easier!

In present lifestyle it is normal to get puberty at early age. Give her the total information about menstrual hygiene & you can also gift her the menstrupedia comic book from which she will learn many things.
