Joint Family:In-laws visit to U.S.
2006-08-11
Name: Les

I was looking for advice on my in-laws visiting. I am a girl from the U.S. and married a guy from Delhi. We live in the U.S. I really have trouble with the length of stay of his parents and how to live with them while they are here. I love his mom and dad...but when they come here it is really nuts for me. She takes over my kitchen and expects me and (our) 2 year old to eat and behave as if this is normal for us. (They also change my regular routines...like cleaning/laundry..etc.) I do cook Indian food primarily...but not the way she makes it (greasy, oily, spicy, salty). His parents are also weird with my son...they do things like poking, pretend hitting, they put him in precarious physical positions (like hanging him over a bridge/ or a 3 story building)...etc. I really want them to go home (they have been here for 2 months). My husband doesnt do or say anything. I feel like I need to move out with my son until they leave in another 2 months (total visit 4 months). They are very disruptive to my home. WHy is it ok for them to come into my home and change everything to fit their comfort level? I want to be respectful and do not want to create problems...but I feel like they have not been considerate of me and the culture we live here in the U.S. What should I do???? ANy advice???

Welcome to world of Indian Families!
Yeh, This is the tradition there in India, which I have gone through.Your MIL expects you to do everything the way she is used to be!! And one more bad thing is they will make you think that they are the parents of your kid and you just a working person at home!! This will not change. Give time for your self, you'll feel good.

Talk to your husband regarding this. I hope he will listen to you.(Usually Indian guys are Mamma's boys, they just hate to listen anything against them).

The best thing is to get out off the house for some time for some hobby class. Because its never ending cribbing at home!

Its matter of some more time, imagine the states of DILs staying with their In-laws all the time...so be happy about it.

All the best. Take good care.

Should a single man live with his mum in India?
I am a man in my late 40s and I have lived abroad in USA for the past two decades. I never had any interest in marrying or having kids so I never married. Recently my Dad passed away and my mother will be alone. I have made enough money to retire comfortably but because I am used to the American lifestyle I can't live in India. Recently my relatives have started saying tha... - Venkat Dabri [View Message]
