Hi,

Hope the following article helps.

During pregnancy, hormonal changes play an important physiologic role in maintaining a constant supply of glucose to the growing fetus. Initially, hormonal changes occur that result in the shift of metabolic products eg, glucose from the mother toward the growing fetus. Moreover, the rising concentrations of hormones further enhance fetal nutrition through increasing release of fatty acids and conversion of amino acids to glucose by a process known as gluconeogenesis

During a normal pregnancy, there is a gradual increase in insulin resistance. Although most pregnant women are able to maintain normal blood glucose levels, some pregnant women are unable to maintain euglycem a Women who are genetically disposed to gestational diabetes mellitus GDM are unable to secrete sufficient insulin to meet their requirements during pregnancy or exhibit an exaggerated insulin resistance or a combination of these defects.

In GD test, which is usually taken during 24 to 28 week, Dr. will test sugar level of a pregnant women. You will be generally ask not to eat anything before testing and they will give you glucose solution to drink and after 3 hrs Dr will check your sugar level. If GD is found, you will be asked to maintain your diet so as the sugar level is normal. If GD is treated properly there is no risk to you and baby however if untreated it will result in high birth weight of the baby which can not be delivered normal and has to go thru caesarian.

Possible signs of GD can be unusual increase in weight during 5,6 month, drinking lot of water and frequent urinate. However these signs does not always mean you have GD.

Hi Jyotsna,

Yes, in india Drs don't do this test unless they suspect increase in your sugar level in your normal urine test. But in US or any other developed countries this test is very common because more and more girls wants to deliver normal rather than caesarian. I think best is to follow what your Gynic says since this will keep your trust with her and you will be more comfortable.

Keep in touch.
