Health Issues:Cold, cough - IMP - for Hetal and other friends

Hi Hetal
My 9 month old daughter suffers from Cold and Cough and finds it extremely difficult to breathe through her nose due to the nasal conjestion. Incidentally she has also started teething. The cold started one fine day, infact 3 days back, after she slept right under the ceiling fan which blew at full throttle (thats the only reason I can find - it could actually be due to a Viral Infection).
Doc prescribed Swich, an antibiotic, and other medicines like Maxtra, Nasivion. She finds it very irritating when medicines are given in fillers and nasal drops will bring her to an extreme state of protest.
Does cough and cold and accompanying fever have anything to do with teething. She is drooling which I presume could be due to teething.
Baby also finds it difficult to eat. She never had problems feeding (she is fed on formula food and solids), but after having contracted this, she is averse to being fed - maybe due to the chest and nasal discomort. Please let me know what kind of foods are good for her.
Thanks in advance for the advice.

Hetal replied. signs of teething includes cough, cold, mild fevers upto 100,,and not above that...and yes,,,,drooling, bbaby being fussy without reason,,extremely irritative in moods,,diareaa/loose motions or irregular bowels and disturbed sleeps...
in your case, when the baby started teething, he might have had mild cold or cough,,,,and when slept just below fan,,might have triggerd him to go worst..
full throttle fan givs dry stuffy nose and some babies catch cold,, and baby is not fit enough at 9months to breathe so much of air circulating with lots of force,,around him....
various signs of tteething that are mild in severity,,MAY lead to HIGH fever, cold, and cough...or catching further viral infections related to these things..
baby hesitates to feed or feel hungry because of 1.teething 2.sore throat due to repeated coughing(if at all cough is severe),,,and lack of interest in liquids due to stufy nose..
use of saline drops might help,,use as needed, and keep removing the mucus whenever you hear the nose stuffed or a sound in breathing..
liquid diet is most prefrd by babies during this time,,expect loss of apetite, lack of interst in foods or feeding during teething, and symptoms associated with it,,,
your baby should be recovering by 5days,,from the day of the first dsage,,,,,,because by then atleast some recovery is expected if at all the cold was just due to exposure to too much of air,,or if at all it was due to teething,,,a teeth bud or white line is expected to come out or may be a rupture on the gums might happen....
expect the same..
other foods that she might like teething biscuits that are babies in teething,,soothers like orajel also helps,if you are in US...other foods that your baby might like is hard foods, finger foods or dependng on her preferences,,something cold to bite on like teething rings or so,,but since your baby is havign severe cold cold teethers might not be a good idea...
since i wasnt able to find out the texture she likes,,not much i can guide...
you have to just keep trying to give him whatever he likes,,at watever time,,and try to offer her bm, more if you are still offering bm or formula...
at 9months i expect that your baby must be taking quite alot of vegies and fruits so try offering her warm soups with lots of vegies,,,,might give her all she needs,,add in some breadcrumbs to make it interesting...
however, it depnds on the textures pref by your baby,,,so try to offer her complete diet in one feed whichever she takes,,,in these times, u dont know whether she will eat another time or not ! thats y....
also, applying vicks baby rub on chest, back of chest, feet, often helps to reduce the congestns and relieve cough..keep your baby warm enough at the same time well ventilated with good cotton clothing,if cold then 2-3layers of clothing instead of thick wool clothing,,and let his hands, chest, feet, legs all be covered,,,
i assume that its winter now at your place,,so warm humidifier wil help her recover better with cold, cough or congstion,,
personally commenting further,,, during teething, all these factors are pretty common, and i am only worried as to why such medicines are been prescribed by your dr,,,unless ur dr doubts it as a viral infection or some seasonal viral...thats common these days too,,just the right season is going on for it...
since dr has already prescribed these,,complete the dosage as suggested by your dr,, and report your dr about the recovery after 5 days,,
make sure his fever doesnt go above 100 !!! or cold/cough doesnt get severe..avoid ne scented perfumes or air freshners,,until he recovers,,these too will make it worst..
keep your house cross ventilatd,,so that if at all its viral infection, it doesnt stay inside the house,,,continuous use of heater or air conditioning or full throttle fan in closed room dehumidfies air causing severe irritation in breathing,,so use of warm humidifier might help in such a case,,,keep your baby fresh,,so that he doesnt get fussy,,often babies like frequent change of fresh new cloths, diapers when they arent feeling well...
ne severity in condition of health should be reported to dr immediately...
would love to hear update,,thats all i can advice as of now...

it dpends on mosquito repellent you are using. ask your elders, if they have been using it around children that are of your baby age,,and then it shouldnt be a problem. if at all,,,avoid making your baby sleep next to the place where the repellent is kept...or else,,close the room, onn the repelnt,,and then for 30mins or so,,let it stay on,,,
before sleeping open one window for some 5-10mins or until all the strong scent or the smell goes away,,, and then you all sleep with baby in it..once all the strong smell of it, goes off,,you can close the window and then sleep...its not the smell, but the smoke that has burned chemical in it,,reduces the mosquitos...
mostly all replnt mentions that safe or not around children,,and the best thing to do is ask your dr about it,,he will suggest you the right one that is completly safe for your baby of this age..also there are some ointments and lotions that are better than all these mosquito replents,,that throws out strong smells,,,sometimes these smell causes irritation in eyes.skin and mild choking with kids,,even when all the strength of its smell is gone,,so ask your dr,,for a safe use...

Thanks Hetal - thanks very much. We are in Trivandrum, Kerala, India and the climate here is the worst. Very humid, ocassional rains, too hot at noon - this has created lot of health issues across the state - to add to that the outburst of Chikungunya and Dengue Fever.
There is one another thing I wanted to know - will the usage of Mosquito repellent cause damage to the respiratory/other systems in the long run. My husband shuns at the sight of these - but for this we all could have contracted the deadly virus transmitted by the mosquitos.
If you dont mind could you please send your e-mail id to g123mail (at) gmail (dot) com?

RE: Eczema concern
Hello,
I had a similar query a few months ago concerning eczema occuring in toddlers. As far as I know, it can be due to a varrying number of factors and common foods that end up causing the condition in 1-2 year old toddlers.
In my research I found this article really helpful in addressing the problem:
