Due Date Club August 2003:Maternity Leaves
2003-05-08
Name: Monika

Hi All August Mom's
Hope all of you are in the pink of health and eargerly waiting for the due-day as I'm ..... Hey, 1 qs. to all the working women we have in this group (and specially the ones who are working in Delhi, India) \";WHEN ARE YOU PLANNING TO GO FOR YOUR MATERNITY LEAVES ?????\"; The total period of Maternity leaves in india is 3 months. And I have read some rules on Maternity leaves as well on the net which says it starts from 6 weeks before the EDD and go upto 6 weeks after EDD. But, I'm confused thinking that if I'm able to continue my work till the end then why to take unnecessarily 6 weeks leaves before EDD, why not to use them once the baby is born. GIVE ME YOUR THOUGHTS YOUNG LADIES ! and help me decide / plan my leaves.
Thanks ............. in advance

Thanks Sonia for your suggestion. Thats what even I'm planning to do. But I just want to wait for some more time to pass and then in the begining of July, I'll talk to him and try to convince upon these factors. But I know him, he is such a rigid person that it'll take me really hard to convince him on this matter as he has not approved the Maternity leaves of the other two cases happened a few months back in our organisation in some other department. So lets see......... but whateven it is going to be, I have decided that I'm not going to take tension anymore. If he approves my leaves as per my wish, then its valent good otherwise I'll make it very clear that no way I can come back after 6 weeks of my EDD as the baby will need me and the Doctor has already told me that ideally you should stay with your child for full 3 months intially and she has also said there there could be some other problems lateron, and then you'd require more time at home.

Just pray for me that everything goes on well

Hi Sonia,

I'm not as lucky as you are to get a good Boss. AND the 6 weeks before & after funda is correct as per the Maternity Act, you can visit the website also if you want. But still it is always agreed by the boss as per the convenience of the Would-be-mom that till what date she wants to work. But my Boss is different. He is not agreeing.

My Doctor has also said that you can take leaves from Aug-01 as my EDD has been postponed from 11th to 25th Aug. But she will not give anything in writing saying that you are fit to attend your office till this date. So, I don't know what to do ?????

I could say that u talk to ur boss that ur aim is not only to take leave but also the useful leave which can solve your purpose, it is not that what has written in the act u have to do that it is an understanding between the employer and the employee, in every co. people use to take leave accroding to their doctors not according to act. whenever the leave is required ur doc tell u and u apply one month before your EDD according to the doc.

Hi Again Charu,

I forgot to answer your remaining questions.. :)
Yes, I stay in a very small but joint family. Me,My Hubby, my Father-in-law & Mother-in-law. Just four of us and the fifth one is in transit. :)
I do have a reliable maid who works 24 hrs for us. She has been working for over 5 yrs now. As such I'm not planning to hire another care taker for my child as he/she will get proper attention of my in-laws and the helper.

If you want I can tell my maid to get you some good domestic help. Let me know what are you looking for.

Enjoy each moment..... bye

Dear Charu,

I don't have a boss like yours. I have a Buddha Boss who is a pakka politician. He holds second position in the company. I work in the HR deppt as an Asst. Manager so its become more in focus to follow policies from the root. And believe me he has told me that I have to take Maternity leaves from 6 weeks before EDD and till 6 weeks after EDD. (I know this is exactly as per the Maternity Act but I have also read on the net somewhere that the Mother has an options of taking all 3 months leaves from the time till she feels that she can not come to the office any more) But he is only insisting on the 6 weeks before & after funda. He said rule is rule and also clarified that I cannot club my Annual leaves with the Mat. leaves. (I have on my accoutn around 1 month of Annual leaves) These days in 99% offices females are given a choice of attending the office till the time she feels comfortable (Like in your case). He wants me to join back immediately after 6 week of EDD, what a joke!!! I don't know how come people expects a Newly mother to leave her 1 & a half month child at home and come to work. My EDD has been postponed by two weeks as the baby's growth is 2 weeks behind. So, finally he is asking me to take the leaves from July 15th but tell me working girls like us, how can we sit idel at home and specially the last days are more difficult to pass and they even get worse when you don't have any work to do. Once the baby is born we'll have plenty of work and will remain occupied throughout the day and night but what will I do sitting at home at this point of time ??? I really want to convince him for this but don't know how. And he is such a person who believes that every word of his mouth is a final word. Please give me some suggestion.

Hi Monika

I'm working too and have 3 months maternity leave available... my boss is Ok with me taking it whenever i want to so i plan to continue till i can which will hopefully be till around a fortnight before my due date in early August.

What are your plans for rejoining work ? Do you stay in a joint family ? Do you have a reliable maid ? What are your plans ?

I have started looking for a maid who can help with the baby and housework. Hope to get one soon.

Do write in.

Charu

There is no such rule of going on mat. leave according to the rule or your boss decision. I am also working in a pvt. ltd. co. and this is my second baby, but I will go accroding to my convenience, maximum 5 to 10 days before EDD. This is not at all compulsory that when u go on leave, u can always tell your boss that doctor suggest me to take leave from this date whenever u want to go on leave. At the time of my first child I have given my leave from 3rd whereas my due date was on 10th but incidently 1st was saturday and my child delivered on 1st only & took full 3 months leave after my child take birth.
