Due Date Club November 2003:Avoiding Pre Term Labour

Hi Girls. Thought since most of us r over 30 weeks, pre term labour can happen anytime between 20 weeks to 37 weeks, these tips should help us reducing the chances of having a pre term baby.

Preventing Preterm Labor

You can take precautions that may help prevent preterm labour from starting in the first place:

Drink eight ounces of juice or water every couple of hours to prevent dehydration, which could make your uterus more \";irritable.\";

Eat a healthy diet and gain 12 to 16 kilos (25 to 35 pounds) during your pregnancy.

Keep your bladder empty to decrease the chance of a urinary tract infection (UTI), which can increase the risk of preterm labour contractions.

Always wipe from front to back after urinating or having a bowel movement, to prevent a UTI.

Wear cotton undergarments. Cotton \";breathes\"; better than other fabrics, and the more air flow, the less risk of bacterial growth.

Stop smoking, and don't use drugs or alcohol.

Use condoms when having vaginal intercourse.

Avoid having sex with multiple partners.

Sit down with your legs elevated every hour or so, and don't lift heavy objects.

Stop physical activity and rest if you experience contractions that don't stop within a short time.

Try to decrease the stress in your life.

The possibility of preterm labour is scary, but most women experience only Braxton-Hicks contractions. The best thing you can do right now is pay close attention to your uterine activity, and take good care of yourself. Call your midwife should anything unusual develop.

Hi Simmi,

Definitely prevention is better than cure.

I agree with all the points, especially the cotton garments one. I am so prone to yeast infection.

Thanks for sharing,
Vindhya

Hey Simmi, really good info.....very useful indeed...thanks

I have to start drinking more water.....Pre-pregnancy, the only water I used to get was from coffee and alcohol(occasionally)..now I force myself to drink water by carrying a water bottle with me everywheere I go but nothing close to what they recommend...

Dont worry about offending anyone here...:), it's the thought that counts.. the fact that you took the time to post the info we all need to have at this stage of the pregnancy is what we really appreciate... :)

Simmi, I have started eating an extra meal/snack a day so I can keep the weight gain as per doctors recommendations...I dont see the point in eating more carbs or fats, cause it would be consuming empty calories...so I've been eating a bit more cheese (no soft cheeses :) ) for more calcium and more lentils and beans and protein rich foods...
I can imagine how limited your choices would be since you are a vegeterian.. Here, we dont have too many vegetables we can choose from cause I am such a bad cook and the number of dishes I can make is very limited. :)

I also have been trying to drink more water too cause my doc noticed some protein in my urine at my last visit and asked me to drink lots of water....I have a bottle of water with me and I drink even when I am not thirsty..... its hard but have to do it.. :)

Hi Avi. Glad no one took offense to the posting. Glad u found info useful. I found it quite daunting but helpful too! I have my colleagues going for tea or coffee every hr or so and they know by now that they have to get water for me on their each trip to the kitchen. So that forces me to drink water even when I am not sort of keen on it. Keeping a bottle of 1 or 2 litre filled in the morning too forces one to keep drinking as u can target to finish it by end of the day and have some more water when u get home. I'm sure u will do well. So have u added more food variety to ur diet to gain weight?
I got oven cook food from supermarket yesterday, was kind of bored of roti veg, since i am veggie!
Nikita, I think the tips from Avi regarding weigth estimation should be helpful and like Avi and Vidhya even I haven't heard of parents worth weight being any factor in baby's weight. I'm sure if you eat well and keep ur stress levels low, with good rest, all should work out for the best.
Braxton Hicks contractions, well I think Vidhya and Avi have already said what there it to tell, not real but practice sessions n I think I felt mine yesterday!!
Take care.

Hi Simmi,

Thanx a lot for sharing such useful info with all of us. But I had a couple of questions though...

1st of all is it true that if either one of the parents was born premature, there is high probability of their offsprings to be premature too, or is it just a myth. And secondly how r the braxton hicks contractions different from real contractions i.e. if they r different??? Or do they feel like contractions only but r false alarm kinda things???

Just a bit confused and concerned about this.

Take care and best regards.

Hi Nikita,

I am not sure of the premature myth, but I wouldn't believe unless there's some research/survey that says that.

Regarding BH contractions, they usually go away after an hour. We need to lay down on our left when we get them. I think they are not as intense as the real ones. Anyway, here's what doctors have to say:

Most women pregnant for the first time will often ask their midwives or friends this question, and the answer is maddeningly vague: "You'll know real labour when it begins." And they're right. Labour contractions are noticeably longer as well as more regular, frequent, and painful than Braxton Hicks contractions. Also, labour pains will increase in frequency, duration, and intensity as time goes on, while Braxton Hicks remain unpredictable and non-rhythmic.

HTH,
Vindhya

you asked if premature birth is related to family history... I am unsure as to whether or not it is just a myth....

I think, however, that although it might play a role (since genetics do), that role could be quite/very small. It does not mean that premature birth cannot be avoided.. Genetics alone cannot be the sole reason for causing anything..other environmental factors(mother's health, stress levels, body type, weight gain etc) do play an equal, if not more influential role...in my opinion

I blame it on my prego hormones again for misinterpreting your question... :) sorry

Hey Nikita,

When it comes to determing the baby's weight, my childbirth prep class instructor told us that you should add your birth weight to your hubbys birth weight and divide that by 2 and that will give an approximate birth weight of your baby...(you should add 1 to your or your hubby's birthweight if it was under 5 pounds and subtract 1 from it if it was over 10 or above)..this is only an approximation...

Braxton hicks, I heard are similar to actual contractions (they are usually smaller in comparision to the real ones) and that the baby is not affected at all by the uterus contracting.

Take CAre
