Due Date Club November 2003:Are these contractions?
2003-09-10
Name: Simmi
Hi girls. What a start to my day today! Had to sit in traffic for nearly 3 hrs...got exhausted even before getting to work. Boss thought I had an appointment, but I didn't lie.
Sitting through the traffic, I got terrible belly pain, felt like indigestion but then felt like stomach cramps. Baby was moving but belly felt really tight and uncomfortable. Tried streching legs, didn't help! Have back ache too.
Now after having sat at work desk for over an hr, it feels a bit bearable. But wondered if what I felt was Braxton Hicks contractions? Any one else feeling same way, pls share. Thx.
Just the start strech to go, but getting impatient!!

Vindhya replied. Hi Simmi,
Sorry to hear about your situation. Hope you could avoid such exhaustive traffics. Is it possible to leave early or a bit late and avoid peak office hours, I am sure your boss would understand.
As for the indigestion and stomach cramps part, I am feeling that from last week. Infact the doctor thought they were contractions, but they were not. I still continue to feel them, so have an appointment again this week.
Do you feel them at regular intervals? Avi's information on BH contractions might help us in determining how they feel.
Do talk to your doctor asap. Hope you feel better soon.

Avi replied. Braxton Hicks Contractions
Braxton Hicks contractions are irregular tightenings of the uterus. Although Braxton Hicks contractions happen from very early in pregnancy, most women do not really notice them until the second half of pregnancy. Braxton Hicks contractions are thought to play a part in toning the uterine muscle and promoting the flow of blood to the placenta. Some people call them 'practice contractions’.
Braxton Hicks contractions tend to be started off by either you or the baby moving, or by somebody touching your abdomen. Each ‘contraction’ may last 1-2 minutes. During this time, the whole uterus becomes hard. This may feel strange and rather uncomfortable. Braxton-Hicks contractions will not do three things and that is get longer in duration, closer together and last for a longer time period. Real labor will have contractions that are progressive and unable to be halted. Braxton-Hicks contractions may come and go. They may persist for hours on end and then cease to exist at all. Braxton Hicks contractions do not dilate or efface the cervix. They are not productive enough to promote the birth of the your baby. Braxton Hicks contractions usually are irregular in pattern and go away if you change your activity or drink water.
Braxton Hicks contractions can truly be as painful as real labor and make it even harder to distinguish the difference between the two. Again, the approach of determining if they are getting longer, stronger or closer together is the key. Real labor will persist and will not be persuaded to go away.
Avi replied. Hey Simmi, I know how it feels to be stuck in traffic...i go through it one too many times a week.. its frustration as hell...sorry
I think what you felt were BH's...I was told that stomach tightens up and you might experience a crampy sensation too...(make a tight fist and touch your hand between the the thumb and the index finger, thats how the skin on your stomach becomes)
Resting is the only way you can get rid of them.......baby doesn't feel a thing, so that's good.....
Hope you are feeling better.
but not to worry mommy, soon you will have the little angel in your arms...hang in there......
Impatience has been sorrounding me too, I had to go for my glucose test this morning, but I woke up too late(and yelled at myself for missing it) and now this test has to be postponed for yet another day... aaarrghhh :(
Anyways....you take care and get lots of rest.. do time your BH's if you experience them more than once (you will most probably not)...lie down and get rest.....
Take cARE

Hi Avi. Thx for the caring words. I sure think I felt BH contractions yesterday. Had a better start with regards to traffic today so better now. Info on the contractions is very helpful. Thx. Will try to remember to drink water next time i feel them. Is there any pattern to them, i.e. since I felt them once, will I be feeling them again n often or I may not see them come back at all, just wondered?
Have my hubby's cousin's b'day bash tmw to attend, after that hoping to put my feet up the whole weekend.
Hope u have a nice weekend too.
Take care.

Does anyone know if there is a Diaper Service Provider in Bangalore? They generally provide cloth diapers and replace them with a new set every 2-3 days.
