My brother came from Germany and after a lot of expectations and anticipations he brought us 5KG of virgin Olive oil. I don't know what to do with this. Some people say that it is good for skin and you apply on the skin. Some say that it good for health hence you cook your food in this oil. Some says that you use 2 spoons of this oil for garnishing your fresh vegetable after cooking. Ultimately all says that this is oil is very good for health. Some one help me how to use this oil and how it is going to be good for our family's health

Hi Kevin,
Thanks from my side for such a detailed reply about olive oil. The olive oil which is used for eating and the one which is used for applying on skin , are they same?
yes, they are the same. although you may want to use light or extra virgin on your skin to reduce the scent of the olives.
sorry it took me so long to respond. i just saw your question today.

what a wonderful gift. especially because olives don' t even grow in germany. it comes from mostly mediterranean countries...spain, france (southern), italy, greece, etc. even portugal. also california.
now, first off you must know that it is not good with high heat. when you use it for cooking, you saute w/it, not deep fry or etc. you use a low flame.
it is also perfect for mixing w/a bit of vinegar for pouring over salads. this can range from lettuce to fresh vegetables cut up.
yes, you can use it for the skin. on the face. etc. athletes 2500 years ago in ancient greece for the ancient olympics covered their bodies w/olive oil and then used a scraper to take off the excess. i think the romans did too. i have known many old italian women w/beautiful skin that said their secret was putting olive oil on their face and hands and arms every day of their lives.
it is the oil that is said to be the most beneficial to humans for health and long life, etc. it blends well w/our chemistry, i guess. since it is not from animals, like butter, there is no cholesterol and the problems that brings.
o, it is delicious on bread, too. or in bread before it is made.
in many countries (brazil, portugal), a container of olive oil is kept on the table and drizzled by you at your plate instead of salt and pepper. brazilians always drizzle fresh olive oil on a slice of pizza. i learned to like it that way, too. it has a very subtle taste.
olive oil goes great with garlic, onions, mushrooms, basil, parsley, and many other mediterranean type herbs. o, oregano, too.
o, in brazil, a favorite appetizer or hors d' oeurve is mozzarella cheese...or any white/light yellow cheese... cut into cubes and formed into a pyramid, sprinkled liberally with fresh or dried oregano, and drizzled with olive oil cascading down every little cube of cheese. toothpicks are placed in several of the cubes and then set on the table for all to grab a bit. the better the olive oil, the nicer this dish is. it really lets you taste the subtleties and complexities of the olive oil.
have a wonderful time w/5 litres of olive oil.
:-)

I live in Belgium. And I use olive oil for cooking. Just use in place of the oil you are using already for cooking, nothing new. Initially you may not like the taste but it is really very good for health. You may garnish your salad with it.
