Hey guys, I received a brochure for Cord Blood Banking yesterday and was wondering if anyone has thought about going forth with it...

It sure sounds like a good idea but it seems to be bit expensive...

Any inputs??????

Hi Avi,

Another thing I got a bit confused with was in terms the number of years it can be stored for..I am pasting the info I recd. from Cryosite on this ..
\"; How Long ong can Cord Blood be Stored tored for?
Stem cells can be stored for prolonged periods at cryogenic temperatures. While
transplantation using cord blood stem cells is a relatively new process, and research has
yet to demonstrate the exact length of time over which stem cells can be stored and
remain viable, there is evidence to demonstrate viability and cell recovery in cord blood
stem cells frozen for at least 15 years. Once the stem cells have reached the ultra low
temperatures of below -133ºC they enter what is referred to as a “state of suspended
animation” where all activity in each cell ceases. Scientifically, there is therefore no
reason why the stem cells cannot be stored indefinitely, as in the case of other cell lines
that have been stored for decades. Cryosite will of course keep up to date in the research
in this area and incorporate the latest applications to ensure that your child’s stored
cord blood stem cells can remain viable for as long as possible. We cannot, however,
provide any guarantee as to the effectiveness of the storage of the stem cells.\";

They are not really giving a firm commitment in terms of for long the blood can be stored either..what do u say..

Take Care,
Ritu

You are right Ritu, they dont....the answer sure was vague...with no certainty involved..

Like Priya said, I think, for now, this concept might be an option for families with a history of disorders that can be cured via stem cells or cord blood transfusions to invest in...

Although it is an expedient option for everybody, the cost and like you said, the uncertainty involved in the longevity of the storage just dont give me the encouragement I need...

I would certainly have gone for it, if not for the cost...
Hopefully, in the future it will be made affordable to all and we will have more definitive answers to all our questions..

Avi,
It is a wonderful concept, but not really necessary if you don't have any serious health conditions in your family. It will be useful if there is someone in immediate need, or if there is some genetic disorder in your family that could affect the baby later in life ( in that case his/ her own cord blood can be a life saver). Otherwise the upkeep of it is too expensive. ALternatively, if it suits you, you can donate it to a general bank. If I am not mistaken, I was told that such a facilityis not available in California. so you will have to research the locations and make arrangements ahead of time.

I will surely look into the possibilities of donating it..

It's surprising that CA doesn't have facilities that accomadate donation cause we (as a state) seem to be much ahead of most other states when it comes to hot button issues such as stem cell research...

Hey Priya, thanks for your input..it surely helps to have another's perspective when it comes to decision making..

You are absolutely right...The 40$/month might be put to better use if invested as a college/trust fund, especially when there is no family history of blood/genetic disorders..

Hey Simmi, cord blood banking involves storing blood taken from the umblical cord at birth. This blood apparently contains stem cells that can be used to treat the baby and his/her family, if needed, from a lot of diseases (leukemia, blood disorders etc etc)..

God forbid, we will never need to use this blood for anything but since the future for stem cell research seems bright, it sure sounds like a good idea to bank the blood.
The only disadvantage is that it costs close to 40$ a month to do the banking. And that's quite a bit of money when we think about it as a long term option..
