Breastfeeding:Shatavari and Edible gum,Mom & Hetal

Name: Nima

For Mom,
i guess you are from north india. all these things we eat in northern india after pregnancy.
i want to talk about shatavari and gum. i am talking about edible gum/gond.
I am consulting these days my qyurvedic doc. she is well know and very experienced.
she told me that edible gum gives body heat. eating all these things together is not balanced diet. instead i was told to stop edible gum. after that, my baby was not colicky at all and i was feeling better. i started having hot flashes when i started eating panjiri and shatavari.
i was also told that if the gum is not cooked properly, there are chances of toxic substances producing in body.
somewhere on this board itself. i think its Lata post wherein she has mentioned that she was taking shatavari kalp.she also mentioned that it gives her breast pain as if full but still milk does not come out.
she too is suffering from piles which is caused by heat.

so now i am confused about shatavari. But after my baby started becoming colicky and i started having hot flashes, i had to stop it.
does it mean that shatavari and edible gum are so hot that even ayurvedic doc don't recommend it ?
if they are not hot, then my question is why did the hot flashes stop after i stopped them. i have stopped edible gum because my doc adviced me. but she also told me that if still i get hot flashes, i just have to stop the shatavari tablets and then see if it helps me. i did not take shatavari tablets (i take himalaya brand tablets) last night and i was able to sleep nicely.whenever i have hot flashes i can not sleep, i feel restless and i start sweating even though ac is full in my room.
Mom, did you get any hot flashes ? how long did you breastfeed ? was your baby colic ? i want to know because i am really worried that i had to stop these two items in my diet and i am afraid that it will stop my supply.so please let me know.

For Hetal,
Hetal, i read your post to lata and i have same problem of body heat. all that started only after i started eating these foods.i want to continue breastfeeding. my milk supply is ok but i am worried as i have stopped these two things. Will it affect my milk suppy ?
i have read your post about breastfeeding and how to increase milk suppy.i am following it and am seeing the results in just 2months.
shatavari and edible gum i started because that has been a regular practice in my family.
i am a new mom and i want to continue breastfeeding after 1 year. is it possible when i have stopped these foods or tablets ?
if you don't mind, can you tell me how long were you able to breastfeed. because i don't see anywhere in your post talking about these two items. so i assume you might not have taken it in your diet.i also don't see them in your suggestions. so please throw some lights on it.

I am really worried so asking it straight. please don't consider it offending or commenting. I am really worried about having hot flashes at this young age. until now even with chilli pickles i never had hot flashes. So, this is worrying me.Please understand my concerns.

hi nima

No ur qs are not offending at all. I undstd how a new mom feels .. and for BM .. a mom feels like doing everything good in the world so as to ensure baby gets good milk.

M a normal person, did whatever i felt right. Hetal wd be the right person to tell what is right.

Now abt me;
I am from maharashtra but married to northindian! Shatavari and ahaleev kheer i hv mentioned are marathi things and panjiri etc are north things.

U r right abt gond, panjiri, etc. I think shatavari is not hot, its cold.
See this link
http(:)//ayurveda-foryou(.)com/ayurveda_herb/shatavari(.)html

It says:
Botanical Name : Asparagus racemosus
Effect on the Doshas: Vata: - Pitta: - Kapha: +
Rasa (Taste) : Madhura (sweet) ,Tikta (bitter)
Virya (Energy): shita (cold)
Vipak (Post-Digestive Action): madhura

I also took kalpa and not tablets (i hv mentioned i used to take with milk)

SHATAVARI KALPA: is a well known Ayurvedic invigorating health drink for all . Shatavari roots have been recognised in Ayurveda as a drug acting on all tissues as a powerful anabolic. It is good for eyes, muscles, reproductive organs, increases milk secretion and helps to regain vigour and vitality. Velchi is added as aromatic, stimulant, carminative and flavouring agent. Useful in Hyperacidity and can be used regularly as a food supplement.
It is an Ayurvedic health drink recommended for regular use for entire family.
Dosage and Administration - 2 tablespoon full to be taken twice a day with milk .

Gond laddoo and panjiri - yes my MIL knew abt their preparation so were prepared well.
Secondly, though I m not an expert and Hetal can better judge this ... but I believe some age-old things from indian culture so dont doubt gond laddoos.

I hv mentioned that i had planned a schedule so that the items were distributed over the week.
Thus, laddoo and panjiri were not taken same day. Yes, shatavari i wd take everyday first thing.

I did not have hot flashes ever. Though the baby was born in heat of june. I never had any probs except for gas as mentioned which got solved after reducing milk.

I did not take shatavari from start as i did not get it in north india. I started it around 1.5m when my sis brought it. I tested it first by taking v little and increased gradually. I felt its results were amazing, my milk supply increase noticeably. Breatsts wd get engorged by the time baby was hungry and I never had any probs like pain. Had so much milk that if there was a delay, milk wd trickle out.
(Mothers reading my post - pls dont get carried away with my statement! Pls check with ur doc before u take anthing mentioned in my post!!)
And the ajwain+jaggery thing i mentioned was also taken for 1-2 weeks after delivery. MIL said it was for cleaning 'stomach post delivery' (though i had a question that uterus and stomach are different, so how will that clean my uterus? My sis said ajwain will help in gas for u and baby and jaggery provides iron so dont worry take it).

Yes i had one problem though.

My baby used to pass small-stools many times a day. Small spoonfull, some 20 times. I had become crazy cleaning and changing.
Referred to 2-3 docs but all said \" baby was normal, it happens\" . The poo was perfectly normal, golden yellow semisolid!! My last doc said \" it cd be because my milk was rich in quality, so baby is just taking time to adjust with it\" . And yes, the problem went off by the time baby was 1m old.

I m not an expert, so i went by what elders said abt diet and added whatever i felt right.
May be what u r saying is also right, but cold things like milk/chaach/juices/salads/fruits and enough water balanced it. Donno.

Hetal wd better person to tell if it was right or not.

Pata nahi sahi kiya ya galat ... mera to time nikal gaya yaar, and baby is also fit and healthy (touchwood, but she falls less sick than her didi) ... but i wish new moms like u get the right info and wish healthy babies to u all! Thats why i was replying 'rn'.

O yes, i have also heard that arabi-sabji also promotes lactation but is like potato so shd be consumed after baby is atleast 2m. I did not take it as i had gas problem.

My Baby is 6+ m now and her wt is 7.4Kgs (birth wt 3.3kg, and baby had lost wt in viral couple of fevers). I hv resumed office at 4m. Started semisolids at 4m. Shatavari, laddoos are stopped. Normal diet is back.
And i am still breastfeeding the baby morning night and holidays, will continue till 1 yr.

Best wishes for u, and ur baby
mom

RE:Adult breast feeding
I was not breastfeed in my childhood hence the idea of sucking and feeding from a woman's full, engorged breasts has infatuated me. It is a fantasy that drives me wild like nothing else, just the thought of laying my head in a woman's lap while she brings her swollen nipples to my mouth. Ideally, I'd like to finally explore this with the right female. If you are in or near... - Sanjayhyd [View Message]
