Hi,
I'm going to India from U.S for a month with my 1 year old baby. Pls. advise. What precautions should I take for my baby's health. What to do if my baby gets fever over there.

Hi Sujata,

i just returned with my 10 month old daughter after a vaction in India. Main thing you have to take from here are baby food and formula. If you are feeding regular home-cooked food, then it should not be a problem. Diapers, from what I noticed, the ones available in India are not of the same quality as here. They have a plastic outercover and are quite rough and may cause rash. I took quite a lot from here had extra ones sent through someone else after I found the diapers there to be pathetic.

I also took a Brita pitcher and used that for purifying filtered water(aqua-guard or canned mineral water). Try not to feed anything from outside shops or restaurants.

You can take tylenol infant drops from here for fever. If fever persists you have to consult a local pediatrician. Wish u never even have to use Tylenol!

Hi Sujata, I just moved to India from the US.Check with your pediatrician about vaccines. We dont' do BCG (for TB) in the US, but it is highly recommended and widely administered here. BCG can be given in the US. My daughter got it there before we moved. Other than that, most vaccinations are the same, the schedule is just faster here. If you are traveling in a major city, your baby probably won't need malaria prophylaxis, but if you are going to be haning out in parts of the NE or Orissa, consider it. We also bought a Graco travel crib, which has been great. You can easily get a little umbrella mosquito net here to put over it. Disposable diapers are easily available. Think about transport. If you don't have a car here, I recommend taking taxis (expensive but worth it) as autos are not safe for babies, both in case of accidents but also becuase of pollution. Car seats are available here but not great quality. They sell travel bags for car seats in the US check out babiesRus. Safe travels. Rebecca
