Hi all
My 5 month old is suffering from eczema. As soon as I started to give hi similac formula he had rashes on his cheeks.I have now started giving him soy formula. My pd prescribed 1%hydrocortison, but that does not help much. We ( me and my husband) have no family history of alergies. The pd says it is hereditary. I am very tense, very difficult to see him suffer

Hello:

Trying switching to a hypoallergenic formula like enfamil nutramigen or similac alimentum. I and my baby fought with eczema for 6 months unitl I did this. You won't believe, her eczema cleared up with in 2 days of switching the formula. By the way, we don't have a family history of milk allergy!

My son had eczema and the doctor prescribed some ointment, but I went with my instinct. I knew that OLIVE OIL was very good for the skin so I started applying Olive Oil on the affected part of his skin at night and let it stay till the next morning. I continued this and believe it or not, he was okay after a month or so. I just wanted to share my experience with you folks.

Hi,

I don't remember exactly. The rash used to come n go. But u need to use very little. I would say probably for couple mnths once or twice n they say after baby starts walking. He outgrows that..So good luc. Our doc gave us some samples, so not sure whether u can get it OTC.

I have used hydrocortisone but it didn't help at all and it's very strong.

Hi, I saw all the msgs. Actually my son who is 14 mnths now, had the same problem. But I didn't change the milk. Infact I talked to my doc regarding Elidel. I had seen the ad on T.V. That worked like a miracle for my baby. I applied may be few times in a day. It used to come n go. But now it's gone completely. So check with your doctor n then try. Good luc. Not necessary your child has the same problem as mine but no harm in trying..

Hi Jyoti,

I don't mean to negate your concerns, but please hear me out. I have been through a similar situation. Are you absolutely sure the switch to Similac caused it? I have a 14 month old son who has dry, eczematous skin from time to time. The ped insisted that shifting formula to Enfamil would do the trick. But I was never convinced of that since there is no history of that particular allergy in our family.

I have just learnt to manage his skin. When it is bad, I apply oil AFTER his bath when the skin is still slightly damp (sesame oil did the trick) and at other times I use lotion (Aveeno). His skin had pink rashes when he was 5 months old. Nowadays it gets scaly if not managed well. As some other members have noted, his eczema disappeared within days of my India visit.

To prevent him from itching, I would have to make sure that he always wore cotton mittens. I used the Gerber brand.

Again, it is quite possible that this might not be the exact case as your son. I wrote this since the same time last year I was going through the same tension.

Regards, Aarti

RE: Eczema concern
Hello,

I had a similar query a few months ago concerning eczema occuring in toddlers. As far as I know, it can be due to a varrying number of factors and common foods that end up causing the condition in 1-2 year old toddlers.

In my research I found this article really helpful in addressing the problem:
