hi,im a new mom and my baby is 10 days old..im freaked out about a couple of things and would like some advice frm u all..
1. My baby has hiccups after almost every feeding. Its almost like a schedule that she feeds and then i try and burp her and she gets these hiccups for 5 mins or so and they vanish only if i feed her again or when we hold her upright. can anyone suggest if im doing something wrong while feeding?
2) Also she seems to be gulping air frm time to time. Not sure y she is doing it? any ideas?
3) She has cold and makes squeaking noises. her doc suggested saline nasal drops and cleaning with bulb syringe. we are doing it almost 2-3 times a day- but she still seems to have cold. Can anyone suggest any remedy for cold. also would like to know if my taking a cold tablet would work for her as im exclusively breastfeeding.
Would appreciate ur valuable suggestions. I seem to be a mess and panick at every move of hers. dont know if its natural.

Hetal replied. only one thing to say,,for those who are commenting on others....it is their problem and they will look bad for it..
why are others gettng worried about it and wat is the use of replying those people who are commneting..and how many times, anyone will keep doing that...have you that much time and energy ? i would rather save that energy for my kids and family !
i didnt want to reply but i observed the comments on me,,and i keep wondering why there are so many people when it comes to commenting and talking good or bad or discussing about others,,,where are these people when people NEED HELP !
so please make this a better place to discuss about parenting issues,,,no one is perfect and no one here to prove themselves best..if you know something, come forward and share !! and thats all where it ends,,
continuing a worthless discussion is like wasting your own time ! why you want to do that ! it applies to everyone,,the one who commments and also the one who replies to comments !!!
so please make this a better place,,come forward and share all you have,,ignore the ones who are here to make a mess !
good luck everyone,,njoy it here...
usha replied. is it the \" comment\" icon/symbol used by partner made u feel so?
in many parts of the world the word 'comment' is not taken in a negative flavor~ that is i mean, at many places the word 'comment' is taken in a neutral sense like replying.
may be thats why we often see this person commenting / or may be because this person doesnt find a better icon for neutral replies /or may be she/he is not well versed with use of english langg.
no i dont want to get into the discussion between your guys, just pointed out something i felt everybody was perhaps unaware of
btw, a sincere request
it will be good if all of us concentrate on the business which is parents of babies and ignore such disturbances
probably if we ignore the person will stop the activities
partner replied. looks like hetal and i replied almsot at the same time :)
m glad u got the expert's suggestions!
Hetal replied. congratulations on lil bundle of joy,,
with this lil bundle of joy, comes so many little worries,,here are the replies :
1.its normal for babies to have hiccups. its a good sign,,as far as hiccups are not exceptionally big !
you are doing just the right thing !
2.about hiccups:
they are caused by sudden tightening or excitement of the diaphragm sucking air into the lungs.sometimes this excitment is related that baby is under stress, and if so,,calming baby before feeds helps.
babies start doing it from the time they are in womb..and its perfectly normal, as far as they are NOT spitting off milk alongwith hiccups !!
if baby is having hiccups AFTER the feeding thn its perfectly fine..
if at all she happens to hiccup during the feeding,,it might distress or irritate her,,so change her postion and try to relax her,,,by opening her fist gently with your fingers..soothe her with light feathery touch on head or legs,,,talk to her,,,msaage them lightly with fingertips from top to bottom...
once hiccups settle, feed her again..if they dont vanish on thr own in say 10-15mins,,offer her couple sucks of bf and thn leave it..let her settle completly.and then continue feeding..
if at all baby seems to be stressed, and hiccups are caused by it,,prevent it by feedng her before she gets hungry, estimatng her feeding times,,so that she doesnt feed in excitment or under pressure of hunger.
sometimes these are caused due to heavy flow of bm from breast,,making them excited to gulp the bm,,so feed as and when the breast are full instead of waitng for engorgement to happen..
this is phase and will pass on,,soon..babies once cross 1-2months,,are less likely to have hiccups..
3.mild nasal congestion is perrfectly normal among newborn to 2mnths..unless otherwise its so severe that baby cant breathe,,or remains fussy due to blocked nose. your dr has told you right thing, just continue it !
it is not cold, your baby was in your womb for 9months in water,,now he is out and its been just 10 days,,his mucles, nasals and everything was in water,,now its air,,so its all clearng out..as far as that squeaking noises are not like of blocked nose there is no worry.
your baby is too small for any home remedy,,so no home remedy for you except the use of saline drops and nasal bulb..
all you can do is keep your baby nicely snuggled or wrapped,,make him wear booties or socks,,light clothing whenever you are wrapng herr,,keep the room temperature not too cold, not too hot,,make sure that she sleeps abit elevated so that if at all she is having ne mild cold,,mucus will not enter her throat and chest,,,
avoid taking ne medication unless otherwise recommended by your dr..but you can drink water boiled with ajwain, jeera seeds in it..its good for breastfeeding, hiccups, and also cold !
good luck to you and you have a very sweet motherhood..
partner replied. Read your post yday and i hoped someone wd reply. But i see today no replies, and u seem to be little depressed as well. Let me jot down a few points .. sorry i m in little hurry but want to help u.
1)Hiccups after almost every feeding
- this is common, and u r doing right thing by holding baby upright or burping. Gently tap the back when held upright. Dont give anything to baby.
2) \" Also she seems to be gulping air frm time to time.\" - what do u mean by this? or .. how did u know this? i mean, is she passing gas/burping frequently?
Some gas or frequent burps (whenevr u hold baby upright u see that baby burps)is also common in babies.
3) cold
Hetal had suggested in a recent post how to take care of babies from cold/babies with cold. See if u can get some tips from that. I wd not recommend taking any medications for urself, rather talk to your peadiatrician.
So looks like baby is normal .. but anytime if u feel the signs are exaggerated .. pls consult your dr.
My 5m baby is also having little cold since a month. Makes noises like ur baby. I put Dr recommended nose drops before feed, give her steam daily, put olessan oil drops (india) on her clothes, make sure she never remains wet, sit in sunlight with her, give her everything warm ... but still no help. Since the cold is little, no Dr is recommending medicine.... i hv consulted my ped, hetal and a homeopathic Dr too! sigh!
Keep breastfeeding, it will build immunity in the baby. Definitely ask your Dr if u can take something that will inturn help in baby's cold.
Regarding your feelings, of panicking messing up ... i think you are passing thru post-delivery depression.
This is common, dear. Its natural. Happens with most of us. This stays for around 2 months and then reduces and goes off totally by 4 months or so.
So dont panick or mess up, just assume that this has to happen and let things go. The baby is also new to this world, so needs atleast 1 month for basic settlement in 'life', and atleast 3 months to get off initial humps and get set in life. Infact, after baby is around 3-4 weeks, she starts waking up and crying at night for no understandable reason ... and mothers have a really bad time during these days.
B patient, dont worry too much (first time mothers generally get more worried and tensed) ... take enough rest, eat well, let housework go whehn u need rest.. sleep when baby sleeps ...
Around 3rd month, when baby starts responding .. is the time when u will realise what a wonderful gift the baby is.
Till then, do keep playing and talking to baby. She cant respond but can feel. Hug her and cuddle her when she is crying. Give her love and affection. Talk to her, she can hear you. This will create a bond betn u and baby. And You will also feel good (otherwise i know its boring to keep taking care of the non-responding baby ... like a doll, but its just our mindset).
Take rest till baby is 1.25 m... then Watch tv/movie sometimes, read light books ... log onto internet ... gradually go out for outing like a mall with hubby and baby ... u ll also feel good with the change
when my baby was 5m, she learnt 'expressing her love' first time ... she doesnt know how to do it so when she is close to me she holds my face tightly and tries to eat my cheeks and coos loudly .. ! Its so wonderful!
just wait .. the days will fly .. and then when u play with ur giggling baby .. u ll feel this is heaven :)
happy motherhood!
