hi hetal,
My son is 25 days old and inbetween my feeds i.e. in a day i offer 60 ml of formula feed to him once or max. twice. the problem is he refuses to take it in a bowl and spoon, he cries very badly, but in a bottle he is extremely happy. I am using an avent bottle and strelizing the same in an avent sterelizer. I have this doubt, doctors here in India totally refuse the bottle, why is it so?, whereas in abroad i think all mothers use bottle either for formula or to give their expresssed milk. Is is fine to give by bottle? why is this kind of starking difference of opinion regarding the bottle here in India and abroad.

Hetal replied. Hi, sry about late reply,,vistd this board today...at first, congratulations on havng a bundle of joy,,and welcome to motherhood.
now about queries...
1.a new born 1 month=2month old should feed around :
1–2 months --> 6–8 feedings or on demand, whole feels depnding on milk supply newhere from 10-15min to even 20-25mins. offer both breast in each feeds.
formula --> 6–10 feedings of 2–4 ounces each.,,,
About Bottle :
at first, drs even in US refuse bottle and insist mothers to breastfeed exclusively upto 6months..and even in india, drs have been advicng mothers to give bottle or breastfeed depending how her lifestyle and milk supply matches eachother to demands of baby.
some reason as to why you will find most women abroad or India optng for breastfeedng :
1.many mothers dont get enough help just after thr delivery which often makes them tired and so they cant afford to breastfeed and it becomes tiring for mother without help to continue feeding because of daily schedule,,promptng her to start her baby on bottle either with bm or formula.
2.mostly working womn opt for expressng milk and giving bottle..as being outside US esp requires 2 people working with good job,,and that has started in India too.
3.stay at moms often opt for bottle feedng when there are enough hands to take care of and breastfeedng becomes tiring taking care of thr own parents,,and in order to gget some rest,,neone who is around can feed the baby with bottle.mom presence is rather not required..so mom can either do her household or she can take a nap.
4.In US, parenting is not only confined to moms but fathers too want bonding with thr babies. they have come forward to take care of babies so that they increase thr bonding with them,,which is unlikely in India ! and feedng baby, changing his diaper, bathing baby,,is the easiest way to bond with baby.
5.the other concern is latchng not done properly..many mothers had to stop breastfeeding because of incomplete guidance during lactation process and because latchng was not done properly, even after so many trials,,baby was remainng hungry and milk suppy was badly affctd,,,resultng them to stop breastfeeding and start pumping milk, and offer with bottle,,instead of running behind something that they got tired of !
6. even after having support groups like lalache league and such others,,mom in US often loose patience because of lack of moral support from family members...many succeed only because of elders presence around them and they get enough warmth and patience to keep trying breastfeeding or rather let me say succeed in breastfeeding..
7.even after latching successfully, some mom were adviced to start bottle because baby was biting badly and was not sucking as required,,this often happens when baby starts teething as early as 2months and mom nipples are broken to an extent that it becomes dangerous for not only her health but baby health as wel,,wise advice to this is stop breastfeedng and start bottle.
8. many moms after taking care of everything alone esp abroad, were unable to breastfeed after certain months or from very begning because tthru out thr pregnancy, they couldnt get enough rest that they were supposed to get, or after delivery,,the number of hands of help was less,,so there was no way but to keep working 24x7 in order to just make it up to cook 2 times a day or take care of households....mothers needs rest and when the mother is stressed,,milk supply reduces,,so this makes them opt for bottle or formula..
9. availbilty of alternatives,,unlike in India, drs are fine with offerings of bottle esp in US, mostly because these days bottles are designd in a way that babies dont get colic or suck air and it also helps them drink better with specific amt esp if baby has to be monitord for specific health condition and each oz of intake counts,,which is not possible in breastfeeding.the other reason is cleaning and maintning bottles is easier task compared to that in India,,we have hot water dishwashers that washes bottles in high temperature water which often sterilizes it well and seperate sterilizng is not required as seen in common households in india..only nipples needs a sep hand wash,,and sterilzng,,rest all work is done by dishwasher...ofcourse you have to spend on some extra cents for dishwasher safe and now i gues all brands esp in US are dishwasher safe...
also, the availablty of quality of these products are standard and approved by aap or some health organiztn which makes mothers feel comfortable weaning thr babies to bottle..also some specific bottles that are really good, help babies develop sucking and thn they are offered breastfeeddng session because most babies learn to suck early in bottle thn breast !
the other reason is standard of breastpump and storage conditions are compartvly safe thn in India,,and maintanence of Breastmilk becomes an easy task esp if in US or abroad, due to hi-tech freezers and refrigeratorss...
not to mention special flow nipples of bottles that further help babies to remain gas free or colic free.
so altogther these factors counts when it comes to health of baby and opting for bottle or formula or exprssed bm..no mother will continue breastfeeding at the cost of baby empty stomach,,which is what even drs recmnds thus mother has to offer bottle...
breastfeeding has its qualities, and bottle has its own,,its upto mothers to decide how they will go about it dpending on how the thngs pass on with thr breastfeeding session and daily life routines..
babies are always happy sucking fromm bottle because the flow of milk is constant compared to breast and the sucking is easier thn the efforts required in breastfeeding !the only bad part of bottle feeding is there are higher risk of ear infections, nasal infections, tooth decay in case of babies sleeping with bottles after 5months of age or during midnights,,gum decay same as in case of babies sleepng with bottles and apart from above all,,bottled babies tend to get overfed because the flow of liquid is constant and babies love to drink warm formula or Bm until they end up making themselves sleep..
all these risk can be eliminated with proper feeding positions, counting on how much baby drinks in 24hours or required feeds, and its schedules...as far as you are careful in taking care of these,,there is no way a baby can get ne kind of infection or habits,,unless mothers put him to that habit !
also, its not only BM that benefits,,its also the act of breastfeeding that actually benefits babies,,research show that breastfeed babies have higher oral developments and hand-to-eye coordination of baby makes baby a step ahead in terms of these developments,,but these again can be easily adopted by babies who are formula fed or bottle fed babies with various playtime exercises and diff toys that are now in market !!!
thats how at first, all promote breastfeeding but as and when the situations and daily life demands,,, milk supply becomes irregular,,offering bottle with either bm or formula becomes a practical approach without lettng your baby cry with hungry stomach !
hope this suffices.....
Saina replied. The baby is happy and healthy, doesnt cry for bottle or bf.
If u think i shd continue in this hotch-potch manner for some more time just bec the baby gets max benefits possible, i am game for that.
I breastfed my first baby only for 4 m for same reason, so i carry the guilt more. I did not have someone like you to suggest at that time, but i m ready to take trouble for myself if it asks for it!
Thanks

Sania replied. Hetal,
I want to extend this question further since i face similar problem.
My baby is 5m old, i am a working person, i feed the baby with:
semi-solids as suggested by u + bottle formula Nan1 + breastfeed.
My doc(India) also insists on doing away with the bottle and only BF now that the baby is settled with semi-solids. But for 3 reasons, i m not able to do away bottle
1- travel/outings: bottle is easy and fills the baby for long time
2 -if i work late Or i m home but too tired to BF
3- baby now doesnt want to suckle (probably due to bottle). It suckles for 5 mins and leaves. 'Mother' in me cant keep baby starved so i offer bottle.
I also hv Qs on bm-Vs-formula. I know the advantages of BM at a high level but i want to know why exactly is BM considered better than formula.
I know it carries things that will help build resistance in baby but then
- isnt 4-5 mons of BF sufficient to build that resistance? Whats advantage of feeding further months?
- a formula contains all the vitamins/iron/calcium/etc that the baby needs. So if i compare a mother who doesnt take nutritious food, with formula, wont the formula b better (ofcourse minus the resistance building thing, just consider healthwise)
- i hv told u abt my bf cycle. If i m feeding the baby max 2 times on weekdays, that too not a full feed, wd u suggest me to stop breastfeeding and move completely to bottle?
- i m too much overweight (15 kilos) so want to start honey-water and exercises in morning. I had high glucose in pregnancy (dint need insulin) so i want to avoid risk of diabetes, so wt reduction is important and 6 am morning is the time i hv got, rest of the day i cant manage time for exercise.
I found that giving 6 ounces of formula in bottle to baby at 530 am (baby asks for feed i dont wake him up) puts baby to sleep till 8 30 am.
(9 am i m off to office so morning feed also missed but i get time for things)
On weekends i only BF, baby again starts suckling and forgetting bottle, but on weekdays goes back to bottle.
I feel guilty offerring bottle, i am not successully able to give him bf, nor i m reducing weight and i eat good food thinking baby will take it from whatever bf it has.
Thus, its jack of all trades. Nothing is achievable.
I go to ped with these probs and she suggests what she probably should - forget bottle, only breast feed, give formula with bottle and spoon if reqd, and manage ur time for exercise.
I m confused. Can u pls guide?
Thanks in advance

Hi there,,
at first, please read the reply i wrote to sowdha.,and its practical enough to offer baby bottle if you think that whats suits your schedule. no mother can afford to let baby cry or let him stay hungry at the cost of breastfeeding ! esp when the good alterrnatives are available.
if your lifestyle demands you to offer bottle, offer that without guilt..you are trying your best to offer breast at whatever time that fits you..
it dpends on how your priorities are lined up,,if working is imp and needed for your family to move ahead,,thn its ok to support family..because in doing that indirectly you are earning for your family which includes very much good welfare of your baby..
and yes, breastfeeding is tiring, requires alot of efforts in taking care of health, remain stress free and such conditions,,and not all women are blessed with good supply of breastmilk so its not a worth crying for it..
about BM vs formula,,bm ofcourse has 400 PLUS qualities(still under research) thn what formula provides...morover the formula that claims of having dha and hra etc,,are actually not the natural ones,,they are the oils found in diff combination and a specific extractn is done in order to provide right amt of nutrients from it,and further if you read about it, you will know these dha and hra in formula does not claim to give brain development compared to what BM gives !! thats how they mention on the formula pack itself,,that BM is imp nutrients and formula is just a supplemnt to it and cannot replace it !!!!!! so thats what makes BM better than formula...further surprisng it sounds in US, there arre breastmilk banks that help in supplying breastmilk to babies that have certain complication and that certain nutrients are available in BM only,,and because mother could not breastfeeding because of either of the reason i discussed in sowdha's post,,these babies are given the breastmilk from these banks !!!!
you tried your best, so keep trying until the last level of your tolerance and your milk supply continues,,,after that, no need to feel guilty...
be practical enough,in deciding what you want to opt for.
also bm doesnt stop in one day,,you have supply and if breastfeeding is tiring for you, you can pump milk and start offering that..so that it will reduce your pressures on sitting with baby and continue breastfeeding,,by that way you can give your bm to your baby..
since bm is only milk that provides most of the imp nutrients that no way formula can,,and since you are having a supply,,i would pressurize you to continue breastfeeding atleast until 6months,,and after that if you have supply why not pump and offer...atleast your baby will get goodness of it,,
thats how 6months breastfeeding or bm feeds are asked to by drs for a good resistnce..further feeding the bm will just strengthen.
now about your ques about mother not eating healthy food and breastfeeding and formula offering better sure nutrients :: well, its not only diet that breastmilk is made of,,,its also made of al that mother has in her body and she has been producing it the day she got pregnant..thats how the fat levels in women body reduces as and when mother breastfeeds and mothers health also improves with breastfeeding or with production of milk...irrespective of nutritious food..nutritious food enhances the quality of milk, and does not decide the production of milk...there were mothers in our indian villages who never might have had good food or all delicacies of life,,but still they breastfeed thru out the year and babies are perfectly fine...BM is made of many unknown nutrients that dont just come from food we eat, but also from our own body..but eating nutritious diet will help baby to remain colic free or gass free in accepting BM and will also BM will have good nutriotn that all vegetables and fruits have...the other imp research study shows that BM tastes differently when certain foods are eaten,,and this when taken by baby,,baby acceptance to solids becomes easier !! surprising it sounds,,thats how some babies gave bowels of green or red colour whenever spinach or beets were highly consumed by their mothers during breastfeeding !!! a direct impact..and thats how all you eat effcts your baby health,,so we say that if you eat good, and nutrit /quality food, its unlikely that your baby will have problems accepting solids and also their acceptance to difference flavours is more compared to formula fed babies,,also because of the taste of BM is decided by the diet taken by mothers, and varieties of food mother takes from 7months and onwards..
now about my comments,,i would pressurze you and try your best upto the level you can,,but at the same time, i will not recmnd you to run after it. give whatever is in your reach and upto your level of giving,,in future you should not feel guilty like mothers often feel 2-3months down the line that i had some milk production and i didnt try mybest...
i will ask you to continue breastfeeding as a snack to your baby instead of full feeds(because as you said you cant supply enough),,but he will get the goodness of it..thats all it counts.
and until you are breastfeeding ne kind of diet or wght loss program is not recmnded,,you said breastfeeding is tired for you because you are getting tired,,it means you need a nutritional supplement or a very nutritsss diet that helps you replace good fats instead of all bad fat that are present in your body,,so alternative is eating good fats and not taking honey wght !! yes it does decrease the wght or obesity but recently it has proved to give weakness..and not all healthy bodies that are overwght requires this treatment..if your getting tired is because of lack of some nutrient in your diet, honey-water will dissolve the fat levels and make you more tired !!!
if you want, consult a good nutrionist and she will guide you to eat healthy instead of fast track wght loss..
if nothing is achievable,,go for something that provide positive alternatives,,like nothin can replace BM, so try to offer that more atleast until your baby is 6months,,and in this whle process if you think its becoming hard for you,,leave it without guilt..remember one thing that you are here to satisfy your whole family and even though your baby is important to you,,you tried your best to offer,,thn its upto your baby to survive in prevailing conditions..and your baby has accepted formula so you shouldnt be worried,,there are mothers strugglng to find alternatives because thr babies are going underwght because of no milk supply and still not acceptng formula..so be happy about your situation, its far better !
i would like you to give a struggle until your baby is 6months,,after that i will not force you..but carrying guilt or stressing yourself is no good..
as a mother, do what it takes to give your baby the best,,once you think you cant nemore,,leave it wihtout guilt..
take care, hope this helps you to come to some conclusion..
