Hi Hetal,
My son is now 7.5 months. He still doesnt sleep on his own...it takes a long time to make him sleep....we have to rock and rock the cradle for a long time then he sleeps....i use both cloth cradle & wooden cradle to make him sleep....he gets up atleast 3 - 4 times in the night and has BM...but if becomes difficult to make him sleep again....coz of this my night sleep gets totally affected...am not able to sleep in the day also as he is awake most of the times and when he sleeps i have other work at home...i do not give him formula milk...he is on BM only....but now i have a feeling my BM has also reduced coz he drinks from one side only and totally avoids the other side.....we have started solids as per dr. advice and he takes dal rice in the morning(but very fussy), one fruit/vegie in the afternoon, 2 biscuits with milk in the evening and rice cereal in the night(abt 7:00 pm)....how to make him sleep on his own or how to get him a full night's sleep?i am getting totaly stressed.....pls suggest some solution....Thanks

Hetal replied. at first, at 7.5month,most babies neeed moms hand to give them a good sleep..best age to start teaching your baby to sleep on his own is once he comes to complete solid feed and takes bm only as a part of feed...which is by 9-10mnths and onwards...
he gets up at night because he is not getting complete feed of either : solidss or total feeds of bm from you,,the other is less or inadequate liquid intake thru the day ( apart from mealtime water and your bm feeds or formula feeds).
this is also the month when most babies start to have their teething process on a peak,,ths may be the reason that to soothe himself to sleep,,he will ask for breast nipples to suck on,,and sleep with it.
since has stopped latching on the otherr side, it clearly means that he knows that bm is going off there,,,so now its high time for you to start full meals of solids and formula..ask your dr about formula brand or type,,he will recmnd you one which is right for your baby,,,various formula gives almost same nutrients but dependng on baby prefernces and needs, the brands are recmnded by dr..
at 7months,a healthy baby is expected to eat approx or around below :
http(:)//www(.)indiaparenting(.)com/boards/showmessage(.)cgi?messageid=5638&table_name=dis_feeding
when you say that he is very fussy with dal and rice,,,how should i understand that ??? is it that he is gassy, or is it that he doesnt accept it or eat it all or makes meal time hard time ?? or is it that he vomits ??
what do you mean by fussy please explain...
how often you bm, whats his daily food schedule/diet chart..let me know if we can work out something good out of it...
some really good tips on making your baby sleep on his own :
1.give your baby an environment which he prefers to sleep.
2.avoid using the cry-it-out methods..they will make your and your baby life miserable,,and to add it will make your baby get mentally distressed.
3.night feedings are normal for upto almost 8months,,so after thn try other ways to make him sleep,,like,,1.ask your dh or neone else to make him sleep.2.ensure a good activity levels so that he gets into a good healthy routine of meals, stools and sleeping hours.3. now that he will be no more infant,,you can try that he doesnt sleep from 7evening and onwards,,at the same time try to get him into a schedule that from the time he wakes up to his meals, and all activity levels,,,just make sure that he doesnt get overtired and takes a nap whenever you see him getting tired,,he is going thru alot at this time and the only thing you can do is make sure he doesnt get overtired and remains hungry,,,,
if a baby is full, has regular bowels, gets a good exercise/playtime thru the day,and before sleep takes a good feed of formula/bm thn,,there are chances for him to get into a good sound sleep...
4.other ways,,now that he is 8months, he will listen to you,,,start introducing him to words,,speak to him as if you are actually talking to him,///actually talk to him,,,with lots of love, soft voice and calm him before sleep,,make that a rountine,,read books to him big pictures,,babies this young love to see big colourful pictures,,,,read them the contents of the books,,settle him,,,once settled,,him rock a while and make him sleep...
he is habituated to cradle,,so leave that habit,,try other ways to rock him and let the cradle disappear from the place so that he cant see it...talk to him, soothe him with gentle rub on his head,as if your massaging with finger tips,,or take him to your shoulder and rub his back gently with your fingers and palm, gently from top to bottom,,this will relax him,,,give a massage in his legs,,it will help him get rid of sore legs, that babies start gettting from 6months onwards,,when their legs starts kicking alot when placed on back,,,
also, giving a good bath, before a good night feed, with light music,,or mother singing sweet songs with lots of melodies irrespective of voice tone :),,,,soothes a tired baby...
feed him well and make sure his surroundings hv dim light and all these factors often sooth a baby and helps him sleep better !!!
a good luck to you.
take care,,,

Thanks for ur msg Hetal. It was really really a useful one. Now i really feel his intake of BM may be less. Will talk to the Dr abt Formula. Dr already advised me to start giving him milk(Nandini milk which we get in blore). but i had not started that since i thought it was similar to cow's milk and i read in few posts to avoid cow's milk for babies under 1 yr. But i feel sad that my BM may have reduced now. I wanted to feed him till atleast 1 year:-(
He is fussy in the sense, eats a little then doesnt eat atall. He refuses to take the food. But for the past 3 days he seems to be fine. Dr has asked me to start giving Dal rice both in the morning and in the night. Is that necessary now? My In-law says she never started rice until one yr of age for her sons and so it is enough to give rice once a day. so i give cereal in the night. What do u say abt this?
He takes BM around 4 - 5 times in the day and about 4 times in the night. But it is hardly for 5 - 10 min max.
What can i do to increase my supply? I take only one glass of milk a day as i hate milk but now am a little worried if that has caused the supply to come down. what can i eat now to increase the supply?...is it too late now?cant i feed him till 1 yr atleast?
Pls give me ur comments on this. Thanks a lot.
take care

My baby girl is unable to sleep properly due to skin rashes. I have resumed oil massages to help calm her down and facilitate better sleep, using CITTA Baby Massage Oil. Additionally, I am applying the ointment recommended by her doctor for the rashes. Could you please provide me with more ideas that can promote better sleep for her?... - Sanchari Tarafdar [View Message]

RE:How to Develop a Sleep Routine for your Newborn
According to me this is good but then you cannot force your child to sleep as per your wish as kids as really bad in this and they have a tendency to sleep in day and get up in late night so according to me this is not the key to success, please post if i am wrong.... - Anita [View Message]
