Speech:Speech and behavior problems
2005-05-31
Name: A concerned mom

My son is 2.5 yrs old. He does not make proper eye contact when called by his name. He gets very much involved in a perticular activity that he is doing and does not get attention easliy if called. He is also delaying in speech. He speaks over 20 words, but speaks them inconsistently, i.e. he speaks more when he wants rather than when I want/expect him to speak. He also likes playing more on his own than mixing with other kids in daycare. He is very active otherwise. Has anyone had similar experience. I am really worried about this. Is this a normal behavior in kids? or something alarming?

Hi Dear it will be good if you can send your son to a normal speaking class. They have some tactics which will help you to make him talk also check with doctor about if there is any medical cure for this.

I think you should encourage him to make friends in the neighborhood and also in his playschool if he goes to one and if he doesn't you should find a good playschool for him as soon as possible so that he learns how to mix up with kids.

Usually kids of that age are quite hyper active in all the activities and specially the boys and since your son is not getting much involved in things you should make an effort to get him involved in activities with other kids.

A lot of kids prefer being all by themselves instead of mixing up with other kids. There is nothing wrong with that. But if you are worried about his speech then you should consult a speech therapist or a doctor for it.

Don't worry about the shyness as he is still very young and immature. He will open up as he grows up. And if you are worried about him not speaking properly take him to a speech therapist and ask them is there anything to be worried about.

There is nothing wrong with your son. He is just an introvert and there is nothing wrong in that and i think as he will start his schooling he will start mixing with the kids eventually and won't have any problem then.

First I can suggest Don't panic. Spend more time with your children and engage him with some topics. Some children may take some time to speak properly. It will be better if you consult with a good speech-language therapist. They can understand better your child's problem and apply some procedure. I can suggest you a name Bengal Speech & Hearing Pvt. Ltd. They have many branches through all over India. Bengal Speech has lots of qualified therapists who can solve your children's problem. You can also visit their website for more details. :)

i am speech therapist working in mumbai, bandra. currently in pune.
many parents have question that whether my child will have normal development.it really depends on the child, the degree of the disability, and the quality and quantity of the intervention. With the right intervention, many children with autism can make great strides. Some will go on to independent lives, others will not. Many will need some kind of care in adulthood.treatment can vary so widely, it is impossible to predict outcomes for each individual. but with proper team management of child' s parents, school, other medical faculties, child can improve alot. most important is parents to understand and move steadily with child..
with proper therapy and constant reinforcement by parents child can progress..

Speech/language delay - 2.3 yr old boy
Hello Everyone

Our 28 months old boy is not speaking simple 2 or 3 word sentences yet. He speaks a few words such as mama, papa, aunty etc but definitely not more than 10. Also, he doesn't understand slightly longer sentences, even when we speak slowly and enact it such as "we'll go out after we eat". Otherwise, he appears perfectly normal. Hints for Nursing
