Radhika replied. Hi Uma,
Anu seems to have covered all points..:) can see u r worried, first of all take deep breaths, relax..i would say have a weighing scale helps a lot to see if u r maintaining ur weight. Here in US movement is very less and we being first time all tend to be very careful, normal non exerting work at home ,small routine tasks itself will help u..my mother in law and doctor keep telling me to keep moving because it helps baby too.
Keep urself disciplined now, best is not to have food which u know is tempting and not healthy around u, replace them with salads, soup cans, fruits, reduce ur sugar and salt, don't stop completely, salt is needed too...and don't exert now suddenly ..start slowly..
Be calm..and do the best u can, its only another 3-31/2 months, will fly by soon...take care ,be cheerful :)
Bye

Anu replied. Hi Uma,
I am so sorry to hear that. But don't worry much. If you worry then baby will not feel good. So, try to take things easy. I know it is easy to tell but difficult to implement it. Try to not worry mch.
About weight again, we can do some minor exercises. If you were doing exercise like walking on treadmill or cycling before pregnancy, you can continue to do them. Don't think that you need to burn calories. Do exercise slowly and which should be useful in reducing future weight gain. If you didnot do any exercise before, you can just go for a 30 min walk. Before starting any exercise check with your doc also.
Don't eat rice a lot. Try to have rice in afternoon and roti in the evening. When you have dinner or lunch, eat more of subji than rice. You can avoid potato, ghee and sweets also. Take skim milk instead of whole milk. Don't eat sweets at all.
Again, your weight gain might also be excessive water that is held up in your body. For swelling, you need to drink lot of water. This sounds funny, but if you drink lot of water and go to restroom often, water will come out of your body. One other thing that helped me is cucumber juice. After I started taking that juice, I don't see much swelling in my feet or ankles. Important thing is reduce salt intake. Try to cook with very less salt and avoid wherever you can. My mother in law asked me to drink \";Barli\"; water. I am not sure what to call them in hindhi. They are like some long grains (almost size of rice) and little thinker than rice. I boiled them in water and i drink that water. This will also reduce swelling and body heat itseems.
Elevate your feet whenever possible. Swelling in the legs is often called \";gravity edema,\"; it will decrease when the legs and feet are elevated. At work, elevate your feet under your desk on a stool or stack of books, and at home, try to lie on your left side whenever possible.
These are the things i am aware of. Let's see if any of our other friends will have some idea.
From last two weeks, I am also feeling like eating lot of sweets and I not able to avoid them. This Friday I need to go for sugar test, I am also tensed about it. Hope every thing goes fine for all of us.
Take care and again don't worry much,
Anu.

Yaa weight gain is a prob. I too have gained 25 pounds overall. Its so uncomfortable with the tummy and extra weight. I dont have water retention so far. I think ur weight might be from ur swollen legs etc too. My granny told me to drink atleast 2-3 glasses of water boiled with saunf(fennel seeds), that prevents the swelling. Also I like that water since its kind of soothing and aids digestion too. Sleep with legs rested on 2 pillows. Its little uncomf but u will get used to it, this also prevents swelling.
I do only these two. Hope this helps.
Take care and good luck for ur sugar, My test is tomorrow.
