Is it mandatory for a NRI to go thru an adoption agency here in the US? Can he/she go directly thru an Indian agency or an orphanage to adopt a child from India?

As a post-script to Esha - you can also get a tax refund after your adoption is completed. Currently, you can claim up to $10,000 of your \";qualified\"; adoption costs. Makes it a bit easier to afford.

I'm in the process of adopting now, and I've estimated the total costs to be $16,000, including traveling to India twice.

I'm using Hope Cottage in Dallas, TX. They are very experienced with Indian adoptions, and have an Indian social worker who can work with you in locating an orphanage and child.
