i am a mother of a 10mth old baby boy.My problem is that i want to discontinue BF esp during night time. My son wakes up atleast 4-5 times at nite. His day time meals as well as eve ones are sufficient enough nd m quite sure he isnt hungry wen he wakes. It has actually bcom his habit( I think that) Hav tried to give him water but he is very very firm not to take that. Also i hav not given him bottle at all so i cannot even substitute BFs with Bottle feeds. I really want to stop his nite feeds.

Ferberization is a technique invented by Dr. Richard Ferber to solve infant sleep problems.

Primarily, it involves progressively training children to put themselves to sleep autonomously. While some regard it as a cold, callous approach, most experts regard it as simply one of many possible approaches in dealing with children who have difficulty falling asleep alone.

Ferberization summarized

* Take steps to prepare the baby to sleep. This includes night-time rituals and day-time activities.
* At bedtime, leave the child in bed and leave the room.
* Return at progressively increasing intervals to comfort the baby (without picking him up). For example, on the first night, some scenarios call for returning first after five minutes, then after ten minutes, and thereafter each fifteen minutes, until the baby is asleep.
* Each subsequent night, return at intervals longer than the night before. For example, the second night may call for returning first after ten minutes, then after fifteen minutes, and thereafter each twenty minutes, until the baby is asleep.


There is lots of info on the Ferber method on the internet and there are several books as well. Look it up.
