I am presently in India. But intend to travel to US in the 4th month & back in the 5th month. Wanted to know about the healthcare there and how does it work out in case of getting medicines, any doctor visit, emergencies, etc

hi pinky

as far as i know, getting healthcare in US comes at a very high cost.. it' s better to take an overseas medical policy while travelling BUT be aware that not all hospitals accept the policy you probably will be holding.. so you may need to pay upfront which turns out to be a very costly affair.. i have had experience of falling ill in the US (not when i was pregnant though, luckily) and trust me, the experience was horrifying.. the insurance counterpart in the US of Indian insurance companies is Coris America, and they are terrible at handling claims and upfront fees.. so be prepared to shell out some cash, in case of trouble.. i sincerely hope that you have an uneventful trip and return home safely.. good luck!

Hi Pinky,

I agree with riya. I live in US and i have medical insurance so its not a problem for me. But if you are just visiting US, you might have overseas insurance but if you do have to go to the hospital emergency, you have to pay upright coz thats how the indian insurance work. Then u claim and u don´ t know how much of it u will get back. Just to give u an idea, the last time i was pregnant, i started vomiting and had diarrhea. I had to go to the emergency, was there for just 2 hours while they gave me an IV. The bill for 2 hours was $2000. I did´ t have to pay for it coz i am fully covered, but this is just to give u an idea.

I don´ t want to discourage you but use your discretion if you have to travel.
