Anti-Microbials and Anti-Infestives sould be taken under doctor's direction. Here are some names of Anti-Microbials and Anti-Infestives and their side effects.

Antibacterial (antibiotic)

Product: Ampicillin and Amoxycillin
For Children: Safe
For Pregnant Women: Safe
For Breastfeeding Mothers: Safe
Contra-indications*: ---------
Caution: Periodic check of hepatic and renal functions

Product: Norfloxacin and Ciprofloxacin
For Children: Not recommended
For Pregnant Women: Contra-indicated. Safety not established.
For Breastfeeding Mothers: Use only if clearly indicated
Contra-indications*: Renal impairment, history of epilepsy
Caution: Monitor urinary output

Product: Cephalosporins
For Children: Avoid in infants below 6 months, chances of skin reaction
For Pregnant Women: Use only if clearly indicated
For Breastfeeding Mothers: Use with caution
Contra-indications*: Renal and hepatic impairment
Caution: Stop the therapy if diarrhoea occurs

Product: Co-trimoxazole (sulfamethoxazole and trimethuprim)
For Children: Not recommended in infants below 6 weeks. Reduced dose in older children.
For Pregnant Women: May cause defects in the baby
For Breastfeeding Mothers: Caution
Contra-indications*: Renal and hepatic impairment
Caution: Monitor urinary output

*Not to be used in the conditions stated, because it could cause complications

Are these medications prescribed in case of infections and are they available OTC?

i think these are antibiotics so these should be taken only after consultation.
