Previous Generation's Moms VS Today's Moms

What is the difference between the ways in which kids were raised by previous generation’s moms and today’s moms? Let us take a look at the challenges that were faced by older and newer generation’s moms.

Whether it is managing hectic schedules or dealing with parenting issues there is a lot of evidence that points out how difficult it is to be a parent in this era. About 70% of the nation’s women say that it was easier being a mother 30 years ago. There is also a wide spread belief that modern day moms are intrinsically different than their contemporaries a generation ago. Here are the major differences between modern day moms and mothers of previous generations.

Less Stress and Tension

Modern day moms have to cope up with multiple issues like workplace pressure, peer pressure, increasing competition and media glitz that surrounds them. They are consequently pressurized to be perfect in every aspect of their life in order to confirm to the unrealistic images propagated by the media.

Mothers of previous generations had the privilege of leading comparatively stress free lives as they did not have to cope with parallel amounts of media glitz and had more realistic expectations about their capacities as mothers and humans. They could spend more time with children as compared to today’s generation’s moms. The increasing amount of stress in motherhood has taken a toll on the overall health of mothers, their fertility, relationships with children and psychological well being.

Increased Challenges

It is no secret that raising a balanced, morally responsible and healthy child in 2016 is considerably more difficult than it was even 30 years ago. Mothers of today have to grapple with many modern age issues that their kids automatically become subject to like alcohol and drug abuse tendency, pressure from peers and the negative influence of media.

Children today live in a more hedonistic world and are often sucked up in an unending vortex of wants which put tremendous pressure on parents. A modern age mother has to work considerably harder to protect her children from negative media influences and steer them towards a healthier and saner existence.

More Education and Awareness

One positive change that has come in mothers is that they are now more educated and aware than they were even 30 years ago. Mothers of previous generations had limited access to education and low knowledge about their rights.

Information about important issues such as precautions, vaccination, and child mortality causes and breastfeeding etc were limited. Mothers today are generally more educated, aware about their legal rights and have access to the internet. This makes them more capable of taking care of themselves and their children.

Work Life Balance

While attitudes towards mothers who work full time are not fully positive even now there is a definite change in the ratio of women who are working and handling motherhood. The ratio of working mothers has increased by more than 35% as compared to the previous generation.

More women now have to balance work and motherhood and this requires efficient time management and smart work. Consequently kids of today who grow up in the care of working moms are found to be more self-reliant and well adjusted.

More Affluence and Independence

Mothers of the modern age are a more empowered and affluent lot than their contemporaries even one generation ago. Increased earning power has translated to greater spending capacity and more independence in taking decisions related to the family unit.

Modern mothers have assets of their own and in many cases are seen to be bringing up kids on their own without much financial help from their fathers. The increasing trend of single mothers is also tied up to the changing social trends and rising divorce rates.

It is very interesting to observe the myriad ways in which motherhood has been evolving through the years and the future promises more empowered and independent moms.

Are today’s moms better than previous generation’s moms? What are the challenges faced by modern age moms? What were the challenges faced by previous generation’s moms? Discuss here.

Previous generation's moms were best because they knew how to balance everything with less resources. Today there are so many resources available for moms but they still cope with stress and tension.

Previous generation moms were completely involved in the studies and academics of children but today's generation moms are unable to do so. They spend very little quality time with children.

Previous generation moms used to live in joint families so that had many hands to help them in the upbringing of children. Today's moms have to manage everything single handedly.
