Train your child for the first school interview

If your child is to get enrolled in school in 2001, here are tips to prepare the little one for the first interview.

The beginning of a child's academic journey excites every parent. The mother and father gear up for what is the first step to school education-the first school interview. While such oral interviews were not mandatory in the past, they have now become almost compulsory. There are various opinions on the need for such testing sessions. However, parents have to prepare and train their child for the interview.

Do not be tense

Your child will be judged according to his speech, perception of the world, and basic skills of reading and writing. So, do not take tension. Or the child will get the vibes. Your worries will travel to him or her. Remember it is the first and not the last interview. Consider for a moment that your child does not get selected.  It does not necessarily mean that your child is dumb. It is just that he or she is unable to present oneself coherently.

Let the child open up

Interview or no interview, let your child express oneself freely. Children shy away from neighbors, guests and relatives. This tendency should be curbed. Therefore, preparation for the school interview is not an overnight activity. The child must be able to express his thoughts and knowledge well, of course without being overconfident. This will ultimately help him to create a good impression in the 15 to 20 minute short interview.

Stimulate curiosity

Make your child alert to the environment around him. Do not dismiss his queries as sweet-nothings. Give satisfactory answers to his questions. This will make him respond to others' queries and investigations.

Develop social etiquettes

Habits like greeting visitors, shaking hands with new acquaintances, saying hello to neighbors, wishing a New Year to a loved one, will help the child to not only do well in the interview. But these will be lifetime gifts.

Inculcate cleanliness as a value

Teach cleanliness as a matter of principle. Be strict with the child when it comes to maintenance of hygiene. Teach the child to clean hands before and after every meal. Do not allow him or her to fancy long nails. Stop him from spitting in public places. Not that these habits will be directly tested in the interview. But they are bound to reflect in his interview. For instance, if he throws the wrapper of a chocolate in the room, it will be obvious that he is not in the habit of throwing litter in the bin.

Get the basics clear

There are some basic concepts which need to be made clear to the child. Like the child's name, parents' name and name of the sibling. He or she should know where the parents work. The child must be able to tell why he or she wants to go to school. The child must be able to name colors, fruits, vegetables, birds and animals. Knowledge of alphabets is welcome. He or she should be able to identify few vehicles. Simple nursery rhymes should be memorized.
