I am truly appauld at this custom. Wether it was or is practiced. I am very religious and quite frankly can not fathom how disgusting this is. Shame on those priest and land lords that would pervert these young girls lives. Shame should especially be brought to the parents of these girls. Im sure they scarred these girls emotionally and physically in a way that nothing can repair. This is rape no matter what a great tradition these people think it is . It is vulgur and not at all "rightoues". I have been called a rightoues woman and have come to fully meet the understanding of this word. well said that these devdasis have a great contribution in the development of dance and music and they deserve their credit for that...and very true that they were among the most respected sections of the society when india was under the control of vast chola kingdom and other prosperous kingdoms...but it is equally true that most, if not all, of these devdasis had to satisfy the physical desires of high profile priests and elites of the society,and this could possibly be one of the reasons of their elite status in the society, because at that times the social system was pratically dominated by the priesthood and wealthy elites...the present scenario can therefore be viewed as a much deterriorated form of the original malpractice...

The article lacks depth. Some of the temple dances were women with great learnig.Some excelled in music and some in dances. Some have become nations icons. One cannot say that they came form only poorer sections or dalits. Vasathasena in the great sanskrit drame Mrichhakatim, Maduvani in Kanyasulam (Telugu) drama tell us about thier morlas and ethics which are supposed be better than so called cultured people. They should respected and never looked down upon.
