The article lacks depth. Some of the temple dances were women with great learnig.Some excelled in music and some in dances. Some have become nations icons. One cannot say that they came form only poorer sections or dalits. Vasathasena in the great sanskrit drame Mrichhakatim, Maduvani in Kanyasulam (Telugu) drama tell us about thier morlas and ethics which are supposed be better than so called cultured people. They should respected and never looked down upon.

It's Shocking, very nerve wrecking, I was brought up in a Christian family, and did not know such a thing existed in my Country. Sad,very sad, the Government of India must open its eyes, towards this system, and save all the innocent girls from these so called priests, landlords, etc. They are men disgusting even to think of.

this is a disgusting custom. no matter if they had started off as priestesses, the fact is that they went in, with their parents full knowledge of the fact that this was going to happen. how can you possibly justify this by saying that they did sensuous dancers? thats like saying we should let criminals go when they get rid of somebody that many people dislike. nothing will ever justify something as horrendous as this. it is people who think like this that actually allow the continuation of such practices even after they have been outlawed.

Hi I am an Indian doing a Phd in sociology . I just chanced upon this article and say that I AM SHOCKED ! My topic is prostution and socio-economic issues . This seems kind of socio economic but also very CULTURAL . No ethinicty or cultural bias but this has to be LEGALLY DONE AWAY WITH !
