More Sunlight, Please!

Does your room get adequate sunlight? If not, here are some decoration tips to brighten up your room.

"One man's meat is another man's poison." Yes, these words apply not just to food, but also to room decoration amongst other things - and we've all experienced the truth of these words. Certain decorations may look great in your friend's home, but the minute you try replicating the look in your home, it just doesn't look as nice. This is because when decorating a home you need to keep various aspects in mind, and only then will the objects you bring in look beautiful. So now, let's see the effect sunlight has on a room.

Does your room get adequate sunlight? If not, here are some decoration tips to brighten up your room.

Curtains

Invest in bright yellow curtains of a very thin fabric like gauze. You don't need heavy curtains as there isn't much sunlight that you are required to block out. In addition, the little light that you do get will cast a warm glow in the room when filtered by yellow curtains.

Paint

If your room gets a lot of sunlight during the day, you can use almost any colour when decorating. Remember that the sun will add a yellow tone to your walls during the day, so choose your room colour accordingly. If you like cream, you can go in for a cream with less yellow.

But rooms that get inadequate sunlight do not have this advantage. Using warmer and stronger shades will brighten and liven up the room. Greys or blues will be far too gloomy. Ideally, you could opt for a cream with a lot of yellow tone in it.

If you have a larger room, and if you feel a little more adventurous, you could also opt for shades of orange or red. Bright red would be far too much, but deeper, warmer tones of red like a burgundy can look very appealing. The advantage of going in for darker, warmer colours is that furniture can be used very well to heighten contrast and brighten up the place. Picture burgundy walls, beige sofa covers and burgundy cushions. Very cheerful, bright and ornate. Paint the ceiling white.

Before going in for a darker colour though, remember that lighter colours are often easier to live with over an extended period of time.

Remember though that not everyone can sleep in red bedrooms. Tones of red and orange should preferably be used in a seating room, and not in the bedroom.

White always brightens up a room, and is a safe and classic colour. It can be used effectively for rooms of any size, with any lighting. So, consider going white.

Mirror

Mirrors make great wall decorations, and are a suitable alternative to a painting. Naturally though you can hang a couple of paintings on every wall in your house, you cannot do the same with mirrors. Mirrors should be used much less, but can be used to great decorative advantage. Place a mirror on the wall opposite the window to instantly boost your room's level of sunlight.
