Due Date Club July 2008:GD - doubts

Name: Madhu

I had earlier written about my sugar levels and positive GD test. My gynac just did one blood test for sugar after which I was asked to monitor at home 4 times a day after every meal. Just after one week of counts taken at home I had my appt yestr. My gynac is not happy with my counts as my after lunch and dinner counts are around 170 to 200 mg/dl. So, yestr he has asked me to start with a low dosage of tablet called Glyburide. My weight has decreased after dieting for a week by 3 pounds but still by counts after meals are not within range.

I do not understand what should I do. I' m eating only vegetables or nonveg with 3 chappatis or bajra rotis. No sugar or sweets at all. Even then its not coming in range. Hope the glyburide dosage works. I do not want to go on insulin injections which would be the last resort. I feel so frustrated I want to eat so many things but I cannot. My weight gain is also within limits, I gained around 17 pounds throughout pregnancy. The rice that I ate all this time made me get GD.

Girls, do you think my gynac is too strict with me. He has put me on tablets so fast just after one week of dieting. Have u heard of pregnant women taking medications for GD and still having normal deliveries. I' m so worried. What diff should I eat?

I just started my first dose of Glyburide 2.5 mg tablet yesterday and its working. My readings throughout the day were very low. I have changed my diet and made it all high fiber and protein diet. As u said anything for a healthy baby, just a matter of 2 more months. Thanks a lot again

Hi Madhu
There is nothing to worry so much about it.Doctors obviously take precautionary measures for the betterment of you and baby...it is ok to have medication..obviously best avoided..but if dietary manipulation does not work then doc do advise of medicince or insulin shots...it is in good health of your baby..can understand your frustration fo not being able to eat all that you want...but just a matter of month...try to continue eating a low fat..no sweet and high protein, calcium and iron diet...it is certainly not best to feel so restricted when you should be hogging but it is for the betterment of your little one...I also had high sugar level but it is controlled by dietary changes...so continue balanced diet with medicine..am sure it will come down soon...if you feel hungry after eating all that you do ..consult a dietician and he/she will help you eat much without adding on to glucose level...avoid fat as much possible..AND most IMP DO NOT WORRY..BE HAPPY..EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE..:)
