Hi guys,

it's been a while since i wrote in.. i've been considering cord blood banking for my baby since there is a history of cancers in my husband's side of the family.. i met the Relicord representative and have received brochures from LifeCell but i'm unable to decide between the 2. I reside in Bangalore and Relicord's facility is in Navi Mumbai and LifeCell's is in Chennai... anyone have any prior experience with cord blood banking with either of the two? please give me ur opinion..

also, i was told by Relicord that there will be 100 match of cord blood cells between 2 siblings of the same family but LifeCell says there is only 25 chance of matching between 2 siblings of the same family. so there's a bit of a hazy picture there...

and what if 1 of these facilities is unable to sustain their operations and for some reason within 21 yrs go bust, then isn't it a risk we are taking with the precious cells?

write in!

There are a lot of points that need to be clarified before Registering for Cord Blood stem cell Banking.

1)SERVICE
Why service because in many cases Representatives of the cord blood companies come for collecting cord blood at the time of delivery to the hospitalif they dont come on time then the cord blood will not be collected and it a RISK of loosing the precious Cells.

2)Technology Used for processing stem Cells

Some companies use OPEN VIAL TECHNOLOGY AND SOME USE CLOSED BAG SYSTEM TO EXTRACT STEM CELLS FROM THE CORD BLOOD WHAT THEY HAVE COLLECTED.

3)Company Credibility

main promoters of the company.this is a vital point because the stem cells are to be stored for 21 long years.

4)Lifecell storage bank is in chennai and Reli cord Bank is in Mumbai and Cryo Banks storage bank is in Gurguon. It is not important where the stem cells are stored but HOW SAFE THEY ARE STORED and with in what time they are going to release the sample to the destination when we are in need of them.

5) Please go through the CLIENT AGREEMENT of the company before signing it. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE.

4) Matching of stem cells completely depends on HLA typing we cannot say its will be a 100% match for the parents or siblings.

If you have any more queries please feel free to message.

Regards
Jonathan.

Umbilical cord blood banking of negligible value: experts
By Prashant K. Nanda, IANS, Mon, Mar 05, 2007 Total Views : 272

New Delhi : Several private companies have established umbilical cord blood banks in India saying they would be a life saver for thousands. But some health experts term this " unethical and of negligible value" .

The umbilical cord blood is a rich source of stem cells and is believed to be vital in saving the life of people suffering from leukaemia, thalassemia, blood cancer, bone marrow imbalances and many such critical diseases.

However, some haematologists believe that this is just a ploy by a few private companies to exploit Indians by making false promises.

" It´ s a pure commercial endeavour and does not hold any relevance at this point of time. It´ s both unethical and of negligible value," said Rajat Kumar, professor of haematology at the frontline All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here.

" In the name of regenerative medicine and promises to cure all kinds of illnesses, these private bodies are exploiting the emotions of apprehensive parents and thus looting money. There is no regulating body in this field as well.

" India is yet to register any success in stem cell transplants and has even failed to provide first line drugs. So, why are we thinking of third stage treatments? It´ s really beyond logic," Kumar, who organised an all India haematology conference at AIIMS, told IANS.

There are currently four major umbilical cord blood banks in India - Reliance Life Science in Navi (New) Mumbai, Cryobanks in Gurgaon, Life Cell in Chennai and Cryo Stemcell in Bangalore.

While nearly 200,000 samples have been stored the world over, around 10,000 cord blood samples have already been stored in India for future use.

At Cryobanks, a family can save the cord blood of their baby for Rs.60,000 for a period of 21 years. Cryo Stemcell takes Rs.30,000 as a one time storing charge and Rs.2,500 per year as maintenance fee.

The stem cells collected from the umbilical cord are stored within nitrogen vapours at minus 190 degrees Celsius.

Bharat Jain, professor at the G.R. Medical College, Gwalior, also disagreed with the theory of storing blood from the umbilical cord right after the birth of a child.

" There is a hype about cord blood banking. There is no data to show that cord blood is superior to bone marrow. In many conditions like Thalassemia major, bone marrow transplant is superior, as cord blood transplantation has a higher risk of graft rejection," Jain maintained.

According to Kumar, the rejection rate of cord blood is as high as 29 percent.

" These private players claim to save the stem cells for a period of 21 years but in all likelihood, people below the age of 21 never face such critical illness," he said.

Tulika Seth, also a haematologist, agreed.

" Most of the diseases that benefit from stem cell use occur during old age, when the required doseage of preserved cord blood cells would be insufficient or unviable," she maintained.

" Moreover, stem cells could be collected from the bone marrow or mobilized from the peripheral blood, as is the current practice. Thus, failure to collect cord blood cells at birth is unlikely to be detrimental," Seth maintained.

Doctors also said that India is yet to achieve success in stem cell transplants.

" At AIIMS, we have suffered a setback. Doctors at Apollo Hospital too conducted a transplant but faced rejection," Kumar pointed out.

Private players do not agree but also speak of the need for regulation.

" Saving the umbilical cord blood provides an opportunity to the family to secure the life of their children. It holds a lot of promise for regenerative medicine but what is required is regulation," Cryo Stemcell chief S.G.A. Rao contended.

" We are against sheer commercialisation but believe that private cord blood banking needs proper regulation," said Rao, who was recently in the capital.

Dear Riya,
Even we are planning to go for stem cells preservation for our baby, we have met life cell, cord life & relicord.
The main concern is we shall get the cells when we need, whereever we need them all over the world, very fast & it should be useful & not damaged.
As far as the response, accesibility, availability based on the need is concern i would rely more on life cell, boz they r in the same field for years & reliance is a new bird. I am also not sure about relicord's sources of making it available all over the world. Though Reliance is a big name & can do well in future, but currently i am too sure about them. There may be a possibility of continuing with life cell till 21 yrs. & then shifting to relicord, if they will do well in future. Life cell is very old & also has a record of preserving the stem cells since 21 yrs, though the no. of cells over a period of time have reduced from the no. they preserved. But then they r also developing the techniques to duplicate the stem cells

Would expect the suggestions from others who r also looking forward to stem cells preservation.

Lots of love
Kriti

2.suppose we need it for the sibling who will do the matching they said they will do the genetic matching but what charges they will ask they havent decided it will b decided whne the time comes
3.when asked how do they plan to cure diabetes because mind u till now there is no cure for dibetes they couldnt explain us flat and said most of the diseses and their curing power is still under research
4.its an SBU for the mother companies plz note that ..so we asked if teh parent comp ever thinks of selling this unit then what if policies change and we r asked to pay xtra ..they said yes it might happen
5.also note for most private players USA has cut their 30%grant due to malpractice of this techonologhy so again when we asked what abt the infrastructure maintenance because prices will always go up they too had no answer
6.frankly spekaing we wre nt at all convinced we r jsut paying the storage charges the other chrges etc will b decided whne we need it

Hi Dias,

It is absolutely ok to have such queries...
Do NOT itch your skin during pregnancy as it leads to ugly marks. You can try olive/cocoa body butter from Body shop (preferably cocoa butter as it helps in controlling stretch marks). I used it as nothing else could help my itching. Essentially you have to keep your skin well hydrated such that it doesnt be... - MS [View Message]
