Diet and Exercise:wanna compete with me?
2007-04-30
Name: fat mom I was thinking .. if there is someone to challenge and compete with, losing wt wd be more fun.
Anybody here who wants to compete with me on who loses wt faster? Ofcourse, we cannot give any reward over here, nor can verify. Its only trust and confidence and truth and determination that will keep it going and keep us together.
If we lie, we wd be lieing to ourselves and the only loser wd be herself.

If anybody wants to compete with me on losing wt, pls reply. Then we can use a post and reply in it on a predecided periodic basis as to how much one has lost and who is winning!

Hi Fat Mom

I am a working mom and my baby would be turning 1 on 21st may. for last 1 and half month, i am desperately trying to loose wt but have not been too successful. my wt at the time of delivery was 67 and then i lost 11 kgs and went to 56 kgs. but after few months, it has started increasing. now i am somewhere between 63 to 65 kgs. i waould like to be in healthy competition of wt loss so that i too get some inspiration and loose some wt.

Please help.

Sounds great, Divya.

Please measure your current weight and let me know that, and your target weight. Also share your height so that we can calculate your BMI.

We will have competetion with similar objective - as in - losing so much wt in so much time. We will pick what is practically possible.

My details
My current wt is - hold ur breath - 80 kgs. My target wt is 68 kgs as of now. My ht is 5.5. I am little high on thyroid and v high on Triglycerids count which makes losing weight more difficult and puts lots of restrictions on my diet.

I am looking at losing 2kgs a month so we can take this as a challenge betn u and me if u agree to it. We can fix a start date and then share updates say fortnightly or so.

Wt loss will show up slowly, so sharing wt updates on a fortnight might not make sense. But we need to keep in touch so as to keep the enthu on and keeping in touch and encouraging each other with other related updates (eg - i am feeling guilty for my diet this week, or i managed my diet v well this week).

Infact, we will share wt updates only after fixed period, say 1m initially and then 20 days or so.

Tell me how does this sound to u.

As for initial motivation, read posts by Sandya. Plan for work out - morning jog or gym. I hv joined a gym that I visit after office. I tried morning jog but cd not keep myself going. In gym, i see other ppl and get inspired. Believe me, there are v few gym members there who are fat! 95% of them are slim and fit. The gym has TV/music so my mind keeps busy. There are times when i feel like ´ ok enough jog, lets stop´ and then i divert my mind to TV or music and keep going. For first 1.5m i did not lose a single gram. But then when i climbed the scale after some days, i saw 1kg loss.

So plan that out. If you think ur health needs a checkup so consult ur doc and take medical tests. My sugar was high in last pregnancy, my thyroid was high between my 2 pregnancies, so i knew i had to take tests. At 80kgs, anybody wd suggest me to take tests! Fortunately, none needs medication.

So let me know.

dear patli-vated!!...see you came up with a new name yourself which is positive. Good to know how you feel about the issue. I definitely wasn' t trying to put your feelings down about this, but was only trying to help. Alright, psychological versus physical then i would say physical first b' cos it could lead to mental bliss also. It' s always better to be depressed being a thinner version of you than being a bigger version of you, right :):)..so, the next time when you feel things are not going your way or feel down for some reason, then go for a walk for 20 mints than go for the choclate bar...i' am only trying to give an example. If you can' t walk then skip 200 times OR 10 mints at home OR better yet...clean all the floors in the home using pine-sol or something like that...

When the shopping bug hits me especially with all the catalogs we get home now....this is what i do...i select all that i want and then just wait a month not looking at any of that stuff...at the end of this one month, i realize that i don' t need any of the stuff right now, that it was only desire that was driving me to buy more and not need. Works for me all the time.

Again getting over the mental block of weight is important...try to aim for being and getting healthy than getting lighter to begin with, since that would take off the burden. I did this very thing when i started off....all i aimed for was to become healthy and for that i changed my diet to eating healthy. I never stipulated to myself that i need to do this by so and so date. I said to myself that this is a life-long thing...gotto do it forever. And this is what i tell myself everyday even now eventhough i' ve reached my goal weight.

Look, i know how it is to have kids, work at home, managing career, relatives, husband etc...i' am going through all that too and i know a millions of others women go through it too. So, your situation cannot be all that different from all of us. What you said is true that you need to priotize what you want from life. Once you know what you want then you can work towards achieving it.

But looks like you are getting motivated enough at the gym looking at all these ppl who are there working on their health. If you want further motivation, then post pictures of yourself in and around you as to what you want to look like when you reach your goal weight. It doesn' t matter if you don' t have pic' s of you own, you could put pic' s of any person that you want to look like. And another suggestion would be buy one size less than what you fit into right now, b' cos that would tell you that you are big enough and force you to eat a little less every time you go for food.

Hope you have a fantastic workout today. Chalo, have fun.

Agreed. All points true. But have questions still. What to do when there is a fight first between a fat person' s psychological factors and physical factors? What i mean is, the person may lack determination or motivation (actually motivation nahi, patli-vation bolna chahiye, jokes apart...), that thing to just do it, hit it, get it done! The person may not be psychologically strong enough to keep going, may be under other family problems and under stress so losing hope, may be depressed because of being fat and stressed, may be unable to manage the 100 things in hand daily. And all those things. Then, such a person needs help in first laying down things straight and then picking up priorities. When the person' s life is already almost a mess (or atleast he feels like that) then even if he tries to be more determined and motivated, he may loose it soon. And weight loss is not a quick thing, one needs to keep going for long time.
So the tussle is first that person should work on psychological factors or physical? Ideally pycholigical. He should make himself stronger first as it will help longer times infact whole life. But who will do that for him? Should he go to a counsellor? Or teach himself? Teaching oneself can be done but that needs planning and will take time and there is risk of losing path again which is happens, the person will end up neither being psychologically stronger not slimmer.
Also, the physical attention may be more important than psychological as the person may be already seeing health risks - may be some medical tests have come out negative. Say thyroid problem or cholestrol problem.
Now this person is psychological more weaker after reading test results. The results of medical tests are enough to make him work out everyday, but the overall depression has grown and he needs some handholding. He has tried to lose weight 10 times before in his life but has always failed. And he knows his reason, that he lacks self motivation and doesnt keep going.
The person now wants to be motivated and wants to make sure he keeps himself motivated atleast till his weight is in a controllable range. He knows he should work on being stronger mentally which will help him forever, but that can be taken up atleast after the health is little bit in control.
For whatever efforts he is doing to get this done, i think should be appreciated.
Not denying that anybody reading the first post can see through and guess the whole psychological story behind it, so you were absolutely right in suggesting. But i think mere reading a post on a site is not going to help this person and so he is trying all the ways to keep himself motivated and this competetion is one of those.
Read my other post and you will know. Also, there are a number of other things that i am doing to keep myself patli-vated and to work on making internally stronger, but that story later.
Take care.

Here are a few suggestions.

Alright, first start by thinking positive and frankly fat mom is very negative. and like i always tell my husband, don' t look for someone to accompany you to the gym or anything you take up. I know it could be more fun, but remember that it also makes you dependent on that person. If that person doesn' t turn up, then you don' t go and so on. The best person to compete with would be the reflection of yours in the mirror. Will always be there to remind you of how you look.

And sweetheart, don' t weigh yourself on that scale everyday. I started noticing my drop in weight only after 6 months of regular workouts being perfect healthy in every other way. You didn' t get there in one day or one month, so give your body time to go down also.

Don' t look for reasons to quit or to slack off. This is something you gotto do for yourself and for your family. So, pick yourself up and keep doing the right thing. I really hope it all works out for you. Keep thinking positive. goold luck.
