Well, you can't, by naked eyes. However, there is a reliable guide you can consider when you buy gold. It is called hallmark. While, hallmarking is a popular practice abroad, it still has to catch up in India. But with branded jewellery making a big headway, the competition has drove local jewellers to authenticate their ornaments by hallmarks, too. So, buying hallmarked jewellery is a smart thing to do. You can spot a hallmarked ornament by five things: logo of BIS, hallmarking center mark, fineness number, jeweller's mark and, of course, year of marking. You might have to shell out an extra sum for hallmarked jewellery but compared to the loss you might make for a non-hallmarked one, the amount is peanuts.
Other things that affect jewellery pricing include:
- Making charges: Many ornaments like bangles are made and polished by machines and should not carry the otherwise hefty making charges.
- White Gold: This is only 18K gold mixed with other metals. It usually has rhodium polish that wears off.
- Rhodium Finish: It is applied to give gold a white color but it wears off and needs maintenance.

Don't buy gold or diamonds under pressure. Make sure the salesman gives you ample time and don't hesitate to ask questions. Diamonds are basically judged according to the famous four C's: Carat, Cut, Clarity and Color.- Yes, diamonds come in many colors. - The cut of a diamond can heighten its beauty and sparkle. Cut will give facets to this stone and perfectly proportioned facets will shine like a million bucks! Table percentage will tell you about the cut and you can ask your jeweller about it. Anything between 55-60 percent is a good percentage. So, you can bargain when it goes down. Cuts can also refer to shapes like oval, pear, marquise, radiant, princess, heart and emerald.
- Carat is something even an amateur can see. Larger diamonds have greater carat. Basically, 1 carat = 100 cents. Ask for exact cent size, and remember, there is a huge price difference between a 90-cent diamond and a carat stone, so get it certified.
