Colour Blind - by Editor

What makes you attractive is not the colour of your skin, but your personality, your smile, your hair, your opinions. YOU matter, the colour of your skin doesn't.

A fairness cream recently came out with an advertisement in which a woman overheard everyone talking about how she was a lucky girl, since, despite being very dark skinned, she had managed to get herself a good looking, fair fianc. So, determined to do something about it, she started applying a fairness cream especially formulated for very dark skin. On the day of her wedding she overhears people commenting on how beautiful and fair she is. Lucky boy, they say.
In a nutshell, this largely echoes the mindset of most Indians when it comes to skin colour. Fair is good, dark is ordinary. And because there are numerous Indians who are fair as well, many mothers of grooms to be reject no-so-fair girls, because they know that they can get a fair daughter-in-law.
The result When a girl is born in the family, the mother does everything she can to lighten her complexion at the outset, to ensure she has a wide selection of grooms when she is of marriageable age.
First of all, it is important to understand that attitudes are gradually changing. There was a time when arranged marriages were the norm. When the parents would first meet each other, or they would first meet the prospective bride or groom, and, if they think he or she is suitable, they would fix up a date for the couple to meet.
Thus, looks play a major part at this stage. If the parents don't think the bride is good looking, they don't carry the matter further. And this often meant that a dark girl would get rejected at the very first step.
Now, even in arranged marriage situations, parents often have less of a role to play. Couples meet up by themselves, discuss issues, things that are important to them, try to find out what they have in common, and try to figure out if they would like to spend the rest of their lives together.
Love marriages too are on the rise, and when two people are in love, skin colour and other external features fade into the background. Good looks typically figure in the initial stage of a relationship, but looks alone are not enough to keep a relationship going. Similarly, a good face is not all that attracts one person to another. Attractiveness is a combination of various things. A pretty smile, nice hair, nice eyes, a good sense of humour, dimples on the cheek, a good boy, posture, elegance, grace, conversation, wit, humility, confidence, innocence all these play a role.
The younger, more broad-minded and exposed people of today have a much healthier viewpoint with regard to skin colour. They lay a lot more stress on overall attractiveness, which includes compatibility and nature, as they search for someone who will be their companion for life. Skin colour plays a very small role.
If you are dark skinned, or have a dark skinned daughter, don't wish things were different. Be happy in your rich, radiant skin, and spend your time and money on things that are really important. Help your daughter to focus on her studies, extra-curricular activities, instead of constantly applying lotion to her skin trying to lighten it. After all, Sanya Mirza's mother didn't stop her daughter from playing tennis in the sun, did she

Comments:   Pretty good article. But still most women are very particular about their skin colour and desperate about making it fair.As I am stay at home mum, this thought had given me an idea of compiling a book "FOREVER BEAUTIFUL" (only Rs 199/-) of over 100 beautiful colours which will help everyone to choose their own colours as per their skin tone/complxion.If you choose your colours right you will look stunning no matter what your complexion is.Good luck.

Comments:   Being an American, I don't see why skin color is a determining factor of beauty. My husband is dark skinned (from India) and he is so handsome. My sister-in-law is also dark skinned and she looks just like a model! In fact, here in America, she was chosen over a light skinned Indian to model---as the light skinned Indian was "too ordinary". So, I can't find the truth to the statement that fair is more beautiful. In addition, in my case, my ansestors are from Poland and Ireland...I have blonde hair, blue eyes, and ultra fair skin... instead of becoming lighter I like to tan in the sun to become darker!!! hahahahahhaa. My step-daughter is dark skinned and some people put the thought in her head that she is "too dark"---I just tell her people pay thousands of dollars to go to a tanning salon to become her color!!! Also, I would much rather be married to the most interesting man with ordinary looks...than the most gorgeous man with only air in his head....

Comments:   Couldn't have said it any better Cha. My indian friend is half german half indian and her mother is totally crazed with tanning and tan skin just like most of the westerners even though she is german. Now what does that say? It says color should not create any complexes. And indian mentality is one of the most wrong doing of their nation most of the population is dark anyways. Stop the crap from bollywood all the actresses have tons of make up one the only fairest actress is pritty zinta she is beautiful but so are all the others. Aishwarya rai is also just make up it has to do with screen beauty she looks better on screen some people look better in real life.

Comments:   Black ppl goe through the exact same thing. I'm dark skinned. other black ppl (not all, but A Lot) call me darkie, jigaboo, sambo, midnight, skillet, etc. black guys Hate Dark women and prefer a light skinned black girl (or a mixed one)b/c she looks so close to white. sometimes they hate black women all together and go for the white girl. Almost every black movie you see today has a latina woman as the romantic lead (or a light black woman, or a latina/ white woman pretending to be a black woman.Remember "Honey"?) what's worseNULL It's one thing being a dark black AMERIcaN girl. But at my school if you are a Black AFRICAN girl. dang. they will dog you out

Comments:   I am multi-racial consisting of German, Norweigen, Irish, African, Native American, and Afro-Latina. I live in US and I am considered Black which I don't mind because I prefer it, however I am proud of everything. I have very light skin and when I tell people Im black they immediately point out how light I am, or say that my hair is the only african trait I carry, it bothers me. I think that people of all hues are beautiful, but honestly there is something about a dark mysterious man that drives me wild. I spent most of my youth trying to fit in to black culture and my first husband was a black man from Puerto Rico. After we married and I got pregnant, I envisioned a beautiful brown baby with curly black hair, but then my son was born, white as can be with blue eyes and reddish blonde curly hair, he is beautiful nonetheless. Now I am with a man from South India who is wonderfully dark and we have a baby too, and once again my baby is very fair with reddish hair, I have black hair and brown eyes, but my recessive genes came out. Just weird thats all.

Comments:   People always crave and seek for what they do not have. The Americans want a darker skin color and so they spend lot of time in the sun and in tanning salons. Indians have a darker skin and they want to be fairer. It's the nature of human beings. The only way we can be happy is to accept the way we are. All colors, black, white, brown and yellow are beautiful and you can look attractive no matter what skin color you are in. Just dress right, develop a well rounded personality and put on a smile.
