Tips for Potty Training Your Child Within a Week

Potty Training

Potty training a child is a daunting task. It takes a lot of patience to potty train a child but as time passes everything happens smoothly. Let us take a look at how you can potty train your child within a week.

For every parent potty training is one of the most challenging tasks in the early years of the child’s life. Not only is this a time consuming process but it presents one of the earliest forms of conflict between the parent and the child. If you are facing potty training problems then using these simple tricks might help you a lot in achieving getting your kid potty trained successfully.

Points to Be Kept in Mind While Potty Training

  • Start potty training at right time. Ideally potty training should be started when children complete 15 months of their age.
  • Understand clues from your child. When you child is about to do potty, take him or her to washroom immediately.
  • Make a note of child’s potty timings. Make your child use potty seat when you think it is the time for him or her to do potty.
  • Ask your child time-to-time if he or she wants to do potty. If your child says yes, take him or her to the washroom.
  • Do not force your child. Talk to your child in calm and entertaining manner when you are taking him or her to the washroom to do potty.
  • When your child is sitting on a potty seat, encourage him or her to push so that he or she does potty in potty seat. Demonstrate a little on how to put pressure.
  • Use dummy potty seat in the begging if child refuses to use potty seat instead of forcing him or her.

Try the No Clothes System

Let your kid walk around your home without clothes or in a t-shirt with no bottom wear. Simply because he or she is not wearing clothes every time the urge to pee or poop hits; guide and point gently towards the toilet. At first you might be faced with the disagreeable problem of having your kid pee or poop before he or she reaches the toilet but this will go away in a couple of days. When your kid does manage to do it in the potty then make sure that both of you look at it before you start demonstrating how the flush works. Point towards the foaming water and appreciate the swirling wave like sound it makes.

Try the Reward System

The reward system works well as children generally tend to perform better when they feel that they are about to be rewarded for something. You can use small gifts like cute stickers, candy or stamps for one day’s good performance in terms of using the potty. For consecutive 3 days of good potty behaviour you could introduce a bigger gift like ice cream sundae or a small teddy. Make sure you appreciate and cuddle your kid in front of others; it gives children a huge kick.

Use Praise Liberally

Children love to hear their praises being sung. When you are faced with the formidable task of potty training do not shy away from liberal praise and compliments. If there are other relatives and family members in the house then ask them to make a fuss and compliment the kid when he or she uses the potty correctly. All this liberal dose of acknowledgement and appreciation will make your kid feel like something worthwhile has been achieved. And when this feeling sinks in potty training has been achieved.

Familiarise the Washroom to Your Kid

For most kids going to the potty involves the experience of walking in a strange and unfamiliar room. Since kids are highly territorial this basically involves their shifting out of their comfort zone and this is something that they do not like. Make the washroom more kid friendly by introducing toys like plastic bathtub ducks, inflatable toys and other stuff like bright cartoon inscribed curtains. Make your kid take a washroom tour with you as you lovingly point out all the elements. Reducing and finally removing the fear of the washroom is an important step in potty training.

Coordinate With School Teachers

Some kids take a bit longer in developing organic response systems to potty times and pee times. If you realises that your kid needs to be reminded to use the potty then do share this information with your kid’s school teachers. This way your kid will be reminded to use the potty at school too. Once when this system of going to the potty becomes a regular thing instead of just home event children will start being acclimatised faster.Remember that all children have different learning curves so do not compare your kid’s potty training results to other children. With a little patience, love and liberal use of these tricks your kid is sure to become potty trained in one week.

Is it possible to potty train a child within a week? When is the right time to start potty training a child? What to do if child refuses to use potty seat? Discuss here.

Hi Priyanka, Please do not force your child to control his potty other wise he will get constipated. Let him do potty in a standing position for the time being. Consult a good pediatrician for right solution.
