Situations requiring Immediate Medical Attention

During pregnancy a lot of changes take place in a pregnant woman’s body and a lot of care must be taken. If any discomfort is experienced it is necessary to consult a doctor immediately. Read on to learn about some situations requiring immediate medical attention during pregnancy.

In any kind of emergency situation you must call the emergency clinic than gofor the hospital. All you need is a referral from your doctor or the community health nurse to be admitted in the emergency section.
In the early phases of your pregnancy, you may also visit to an obstetric emergency section. Some of the emergencies in the early pregnancy phase include abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding and so on. In the later phase of pregnancy you can get into the emergency section even if you do not have a referral. Here are some of the emergency situations when you must get in touch with your doctor:

There is a greenish-brown discharge from your vagina

This is a substance called meconium and it comes from the baby's digestive system. It is usually passed as the baby's first stool. As it could be suggestive of foetal distress, it warrants immediate medical attention. Generally this happens if the baby is post mature. Meconium just passes into the amniotic fluid before delivery.

Your membranes have ruptured and you feel something in you vagina

Once the membranes have ruptured, the risk of infection to the mother and child increases. So you must report this to your doctor, and in the meantime, keep the vaginal area clean and use a sanitary towel (not a tampon). However, if you think you can feel something in your vagina, make sure that you get immediate medical attention, as it could be a prolapsed umbilical cord.

Is a "bloody show" the same as bleeding?

No. If you have had a "bloody show" and your discharge becomes bright red (instead of pink) or you just start bleeding even a little, contact your doctor at once. This could be an indication of premature separation of the placenta (placenta praevia), and requires prompt attention.

Foetal movements seem to be intensifying with each "false" contraction

Even though all the signs point towards a false labour, if foetal movements intensify with each contraction, it could indicate foetal distress, requiring immediate medical attention.

You experience symptoms of preeclampsia

In case you are suffering from symptoms of preeclampsia such as pain under chest, headache, swelling, high blood pressure, problems in vision and so on.

You experience sever stomach pain

You need immediate medical attention in case you are suffering from severe, prolonged and sudden pain in stomach. You need to get in touch with your doctor so that he or she can help you to deal with it.

Abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding in first trimester

Abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding in the first trimester constitutes some of the common complains, which calls for immediate medical attention. The diagnosis tends to be broad depending on your complications. Your doctor shall take immediate measures in case of life threatening complications.

Other cases where medical attention is needed

Since pregnancy brings in a lot of physical and emotional changes in your body, you may experience some discomfort or the other during this phase. Here are some cases that you need to report to your doctor so that further complications can be prevented.

Vaginal Infection

Vaginal infection with redness, itchiness and too much of discharge can be a sign of a yeast infection. You may be prescribed to use a vaginal cream to get rid of the irritation.

Itchiness

Itchiness all over your body, especially in the feet and hands is very common in pregnancy. In most of the cases it is harmless and doctor prescribes anti itching medicines to treat such conditions.

Burning Sensation While Urinating

Burning sensation or pain when you pee can also be due to infection in your urinary track. However, although this is not a medical emergency, if left untreated for long you may suffer from kidney infections that are also linked with preterm labour.
Emergencies can in fact be very scary and things can get even worse when you are not prepared. You can deal with such stressful times when you are better prepared. Your preparedness shall keep you in a better position to handle such complications.
It is important to devise a plan about how you should handle disasters or emergencies especially when you are pregnant. To be better prepared you need to be aware of the signs and symptoms of complications stated by your obstetrician. Gathering information in the right time will help you know about critical issues concerning prenatal care.

You should at the earliest consult your doctor. there is something serious. Lumpy discharge and pain in the 6 weeks should not be neglected.
