 Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When do babies start tearing? My son is 6 weeks old, and he still hasn't shown any sign of tears. I have heard that babies start tearing by week 4.

Kanchan (Mumbai, India)

A: The tear glands and ducts are well developed in newborn infants too – in fact, I have seen tears in many newborns. But you don't see them as often as you do in older infants. I would be more worried if you see tears continuously, especially in one of the eyes – which might be due to a block in one of the tear gland ducts. Your baby is perfectly normal. Do not worry.
