Foods that Can Cause Allergies in Babies
Some babies show allergic reactions to certain foods while some babies may not be allergic at all. Although, all babies do not show allergic reactions it is necessary to look for the signs of allergies when new foods are introduced. Here are some foods that cause allergies in babies.

There is no age limitation for allergies. Even the baby suffers from allergy. Allergies can happen to anyone at any time. A food Allergy is something that when the person’s immune system has any kind of serious reaction to any kind of protein in a body that are harmless and tries to fight by antibodies.
Allergic reactions are generally very mild but sometimes they can be very serious too. Foods that often cause allergies includes cow’s milk, eggs, nuts, pea nuts, wheat, soy, shell fish etc . An upset tummy, a rash and a lack of weight gain may signals that the baby is suffering from allergy.

List of the foods that causes allergies includes are as follows-

Eggs

Egg allergy is the most common food allergy among children. Egg allergy occurs to some of the children and is typically diagnosed before age 2. About 80% of the egg allergy issues are usually resolved by the age of 5. Symptoms associated with egg allergy occur quickly. The reaction will be within minutes to two hours after eating the food made of eggs.

Symptoms of egg allergy includes-
  • Skin reactions such as rash, hives, eczema.
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms like stomach pain, nausea, vomiting
  • Airway symptoms including wheezing, coughing, or a runny nose
  • Allergic conjunctivitis (itchy, red, watery eyes)

Milk

It is also one of the most common food allergies in children. According to Researchers almost 2.5% of children suffer from this kind of allergy. About 80% of the baby suffering from milk allergy will resolved by the age of 5. Although current research indicates that the milk allergy happens at the age of 8 also.

Symptoms of milk allergy includes-
  • Skin reactions such as rash, hives, eczema
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, stomach pain, vomiting
  • Swelling, also known as angioedema, of the lips tongue or face
  • Severe reactions, called anaphylaxis, may occur, causing multiple organ systems to be involved.

Peanuts

Peanuts are the third most common sources of allergy in children. According to the Researchers of Mount Sinai School of Medicine, about 1.4% of the babies are suffering from the allergy caused after having peanuts. The percentage of children suffering from the allergy to peanuts had grown from 0.2% to a current rate of 1.4% from 1997 to 2008.
  • Symptoms caused by the allergy to peanuts are listed below
  • Severe reaction s which can be called as anaphylaxis can occur
  • Airway symptoms which includes runny nose, coughing, wheezing
  • Swelling, which can also be known as angioedema, of the lips, tongue or face

Fish

40% of the baby suffers from the allergy which is caused by fish. Fish allergy is something which tends to act as a lifelong allergy. Prawn is the most common type of food which causes allergy. The fishes which cause allergy are - Halibut, Tuna, and Salmon. Although the other fish includes Pollock, cod, snapper, eel. The person who has a tendency of suffering from fish allergy is suggested to avoid all kinds of fish.

List of the fish which should be avoided are as follows-
  • Bass
  • Catfish
  • Flounder
  • Grouper
  • Haddock
  • Trout

Wheat

Wheat is also a food that causes allergy. It is the most common type of allergy in United States. About 0.5% of the children suffer from the wheat allergy. The babies suffer from the wheat allergy more rather than the adults. The wheat allergy can occur at any time even at the age of the adult.
Symptoms of the wheat allergy-
  • The symptoms of the wheat allergy vary from a mild reaction to a full blown anaphylaxis and other organ systems may also be affected.
Other allergy includes Shellfish, Soy and Tree nuts. Apart from all these allergies there are many kinds of allergies which may also occur sometimes from other food items. Therefore, while introducing any new food item to your baby you must consult your paediatrician and check if your baby is allergic to it or not. If baby shows allergic reaction to certain food items you must stop giving such food items and get him or her examined by a paediatrician immediately.

Light and easy to digest foods should be introduced to babies when introducing solids. Also it should be in pureed form. If there is a family history of allergies to certain foods than such foods should be avoided.

In our family traditional moong dal khichdi is introduced to the baby as his first food in pureed form , I hardly causes any allergy to babies.

Baby's first foods should not include foods cause allergies better to check with a pediatrician.
